Barcud Motor Club Rally 2000

Barcud Motor Club

5th/6th August 2000

Clerk of the Course: Paul Rooke & Paul Jones

Route: 130 Miles

Maps: 135 & 146

Starters: 43

Winners: Phil Turner/Nigel Roberts (VW Golf GTi)

Phil Turner/Nigel Roberts conquered the opposition and difficult weather conditions on the Barcud Motor Club Rally, emerging with a victory margin of over three minutes in their VW Golf.

West Wales was shrouded in fog for most of the night and this contributed to a lowly finish rate, only 20 of the original 43 starters made it back to the rally base at Tregaron.

The fact that Turner/Roberts had built up a substantial lead by the petrol halt and were three minutes clear at the Finish suggested that they had dominated the event, however on time penalties they had been overhauled in the second half by the Astra of 1998 winners, Martyn O'Connor/Peter Collins and the Corolla of Gary Jones/Dave Pitchford. Unfortunately for these two crews they had missed to locate the code board at PC20 and were penalised a fail each as a result. They were not alone as only eight finishers had got the controversial board.

The rally was a round of the North Western Championship but only five crews made the journey south, however Harlech MC's Haydn Davies/Michael Evans were rewarded for their efforts with a fine second place in their Corolla. The Escort of Arwyn Thomas/Deian Rees rounded off the top three.

Top seeds, Clive Wakeley/Carl Williamson went out early when they lost all the lights on their Escort, while Alyson Acreman/Byron Jones retired with just three controls to go with a broken brake disk. Islwyn Watkins/Cliff Jones suffered gear linkage problems on their Astra before going off the road just prior to Petrol.

Aled Garner/Dylan Garner took a clear win the Semi-Expert Class, finishing fourth overall. Hefin Evans/Paul Dark and Roger Harris/Jane Harris were second and third in class, both crews being yet more victims of PC20.

The Novice Class contenders had a tough time in fog but three made it to the Finish, with Dewi James/Sion James, Richard James/Eurig Davies and Phil Williams/Gwyn Jones taking the class awards

At the Finish the Nissan Sunny GTi of Hefin George/Dilwyn John (right) showed signs of the car's visit to a ditch - a ditch which was described by Hefin as "larger than the car".
