Route: 99 Miles

Map: 135 & 146

The organisers had received 140 entries for the 75 available starting places on the Barcud Rally, it was therefore a capacity entry that took the start from Tregaron Rugby Club. They faced a 99 mile route in familiar territory.

The opening regularity was five miles in length and had an ITC at the halfway point; there were also four PCs. It ran initially through the rough track to the south of Llanafan Forest, then, after going south down the B-road, turned up the track through Llethr.

A dozen cars were clean at the ITC, but all were late at the end of the section control. Fastest to RF1 was the Ford Sierra of Dafydd Edwards/Deian Rees, they were six seconds quicker than top seeds Gary Jones/Steve Herbert (Toyota Corolla).

Already out by this point was the Escort of Roger Hicks/Mark Hamilton, they had picked up a puncture and the car was suffering from low oil pressure. Gareth Richards/Gwion Pryderi (Ford Escort) put their car off the road and out of the event on the climb up to RF1.

After a short Neutral through Penrhydygroes the second regularity started by the south bank of the River Ystwyth. There was a long run to the first ITC, which was at Tyngwndwn; most cars were on time here. There were two significant retirements on this section; Huw Evans/David Richards (Ford Escort) picked up their third puncture of the night and had to withdraw having no more spares. Also out here was the Subaru Impreza of Malcolm Walters/Dylan Jenkins, they went through a wall, this caused a puncture, but they then found that the car had no jack.

Everyone bar Edwards/Rees and Andrew Phillips/Dalis Ifans (Mazda 121) dropped time at the next ITC, which was after the route passed over the 'wooden bridge'. The last-minute pairing of John Davies/Anthony Davies (Vauxhall Astra) and Stephen Wood/Aled Richards (Vauxhall Astra) only dropped a second here.

The route moved further south, with the leading runners only dropping time at RF3, at the end of the third section at Penllwynbedw. Des Phasey/Martin Phasey were fastest here, but they had already picked up a fail, having missed RF1; they were another pair to be troubled by punctures, plus a fan belt coming off at one stage.

Over two minutes was lost here by Martyn O'Connor/Peter Collins (Vauxhall Astra GTE) after they wrong slotted in a farmyard. They eventually finished in 14th position, without the wrong slot, they would have been in the top five. Aled Evans/Beth Evans were added to the retirement list on the section after the alternator belt broke on their Vauxhall Astra.

The petrol halt was taken at Stags Head after the third section. At this point Edwards/Rees held a lead of 14 seconds over Phillips/Ifans, with Davies/Davies a further ten seconds back in third. These were the only crews with under a minute of total penalties.

The 2004 winners, Jones/Herbert, were in fourth, but were about to retire as the gearbox failed on their Corolla.

Sharing fourth place was the leading Semi-Expert crew, Will Edwards/Andrew Edwards (Subaru Impreza), although they had another Semi pairing, Edryd Evans/Richard Briddon (VW Golf GTi), only 12 seconds behind in sixth place overall.

The second half opened with a long fourth section which looped down almost as far as Ffarmers, before finishing near Cellan. Almost all the leading runners cleaned the whole regularity, which contained four ITCs, plus the finish control. However, significantly, due to a calculation mix up, the leaders booked in over a minute late at the third ITC, in such a tight contest this dropped them down to fifth place.

Phillips/Ifans also had a difficult section and dropped a total of 27 seconds at two ITCs. This put Davies/Davies into first place, with one section remaining.

The run over Ffarmers saw the retirement of Mark Daniel/Hywel Ifans (Ford Escort) and Wood/Richards, the latter going out when they broke a drive shaft.

The final section started at Betws Bledrws and finished at Llangeitho. There were two tight sectors, the first used a white through Gellugarneddau and the second was in the Penuwch Maze. Everyone was late at ITC10, after the white. Owen Lloyd Edwards/Eurig Davies (Vauxhall Astra) were quickest here, this helped move them up to fourth overall at the Finish.

Davies/Davies were second fastest to ITC10 and this extended their lead to 29 seconds, which was to be their final victory margin. Evans/Briddon matched their time at the ITC and they moved up to second overall, a position they held to the end.

Phillips/Ifans finished in third, ten seconds off the runner up spot. Edwards/Edwards couldn't retain their first half pace, and fell from fifth at Petrol to ninth at the Finish, however they took the Semi-Expert Award as class rivals Evans/Briddon received an overall award for finishing in second.

The father and son pairing of Islwyn Evans/Gareth Evans (Ford Sierra 4x4) were the clear winners of the Novice Class, finishing over two minutes ahead of their nearest rivals.

Darren Williams/Dylan Jones (Vauxhall Astra) had been just outside the top ten at Petrol, but then bent their steering and had to cut to the Finish; they were eventually classified in 52nd and last place.
