Lampeter & District Motor Club

Lampeter MC's premier road event was the first round of the Welsh Championship and saw 75 crews tackling 120 miles of icy lanes. The route was split into just four regularity sections.

Starting from the Dalton ATV's base at Talsarn, the first section started at nearby Llundain-fach. The opening regularity circled around through Pont Creuddyn, Cribyn, Ciliau Aeron, Trefilan, Olmarch and Llangybi, before finishing at Silian. There were 13 Intermediate Time Controls, plus the Finish Control.

Gary Davies/Aled Evans had a frantic run up to the event, having finished preparing their four door Escort on the afternoon of the rally. They were the fastest to the second ITC, to establish a lead of three seconds over Glyn Evans/Edryd Evans (Ford Sierra). The latter crew took the lead at the next control as Davies/Evans were 34 seconds late there. Evans/Evans maintain their advantage until they booked in over a minute early at ITC8. This error dropped them to sixth at Petrol, they then retired in the second half after their car overheated and the engine seized.

Merfyn Hughes/Graham Dance were already out by this stage; the clutch failed on their Escort just after ITC1. A blown clutch caused the retirement of Darrell George/Arwel Thomas, a seized thrust bearing causing the failure. The rally for Kevin 'Steaky' Morgan/Neil Spiers (Toyota Corolla) ended in a ditch near Dihewyd.

After the finish of the opening section there was a 'halfway' halt at Lampeter, with a time recovery break, before petrol was taken at Harford on the way to the start of the second regularity.

At the halt the lead was held by Car 29, the Escort of Mark Daniel/Hywel Ifans, at that point they were 33 seconds ahead of a recovering Davies/Evans, who were 16 seconds ahead of Martyn O'Connor/Peter Collins. The latter pair didn't go much further however, they retired their Vauxhall Astra when a bolt broke on the front nearside front bottom arm just 100 yards into the following section.

Top seeds, John Davies/Dylan Evans (Vauxhall Astra GTE) were having an unhappy event; they had already picked up a fail after not getting a code board counter signed at PC28. They struggled to the finish with a dropped valve.

Also with fails in the first half were Ian 'Dude' Roberts/Steve Herbert (VW Golf GTi) and Elgan Jones/Matthew Maidment (Vauxhall Astra GTE), who, running close together on the road, had missed to find the same Route Check near Ciliau Aeron. Without the fail, Roberts/Herbert would have been classified in second place at the Finish.

Fifth place at Petrol should have been Mark 'GT' Roberts/Owen Dodd (VW Golf GTi), but they also had a fail, theirs being for visiting PC18 twice. They completed the event in 45th position.

Richard Maclachlan/Eddie Clough retired at Petrol, having cut the latter part of the first half, after a drive shaft broke on their Peugeot 205 GTi. Meanwhile an oil leak stopped the similar car of Alan James/Rhydian George. Islwyn Watkins/Eric Tong were victims of the slippery conditions, putting their Escort through a hedge on a icy 90 Right, putting them out of the event. Vauxhall Nova gearbox problems caused the early departure of both Graham Hicks/Steven Hicks and Sterling Jenkins/Richard Briddon.

Daniel/Ifans maintain their lead through Regularity Two, which ran through the lanes to the east of Brechfa Forest, although Davies/Evans had cut the gap between the two crews by 17 seconds by the time that they arrived at RF2.

An off on Regularity Three cost Daniel/Ifans 40 seconds and the lead. Davies/Evans thus hit the front and had pulled out an advantage of over a minute and a half by the end of the section. They extended this to more than two minutes by the Finish, with Daniel/Ifans taking the runner-up spot.

Having been on the Reserve List until the Saturday afternoon, Owen Llwyd Edwards/Eurig Davies (Vauxhall Astra) were in fourth in Petrol and moved into third after the retirement of O'Connor/Collins on the second section. They then became embroiled in a tight battle for that position with the Kevin 'KJ' Jones/Dilwyn John (Ford Sierra XR4x4) and Steve Wood/Aled Richards (Vauxhall Astra GTE). After a few swapping of places, it was Jones/John who took third at the Finish, three seconds ahead of Edwards/Davies, who, in turn, ended just one second in front of Wood/Richards.

The 2003 Welsh Champions, Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies (Ford Escort), completed the top six finishers.

The final section, which started at Ffarmers and ran to Llanfair Clydogau, was particularly icy. Alan Hands/Ryan Thomas Hands (Vauxhall Chevette) and Dorian Davies/Beth Evans (Ford Sierra XR4x4) went off into a stone wall at the same spot on the Sarn Helen road; both survived to make the Finish, with Davies/Evans securing first in Class 2. Hywel Greves/Rob Duke (VW Polo Coupe S) also hit a wall earlier in the section, they also completed the event and won the Under 1400cc Award.

The Novice Class was won by the Vauxhall Astra GTE of John Williams/Jack Fowler, who finished one place, but over a minute, ahead of category rivals Lewis Jenkins/Christian Male (Ford Escort).
