5th/6th February 2005

Clerk of the Course: Richard Evans & Dylan Jones

Route: 100 Miles

Maps: 158

Starters: 60

Winners: Peter Collins/Jo Collins (Vauxhall Astra GTE)

A capacity 60 car entry of Semi-Expert and Novice cews tackled a demanding route in the Preseli Mountains, with the husband and wife team Peter Collins/Jo Collins (Vauxhall Astra GTE) taking the overall honours at the Finish.

Navigation was by high quality colour photocopied maps. The competition consisted of just four regularity section, linked by Neutrals and Transport sections. The start was at Crymych, with a petrol halt at Withybush, before the finish at Llandissilio.

Rali Bro Preseli 2005

The opening regularity began at Blaenffos and twisted its way westward, finishing south-east of Newport. There were six intermediate time controls, plus the section finish.

The 2004 winners, Hywel Greves/Geraint Jones (VW Polo), in line with the Bro Preseli tradition were running by invitation, but wouldn't be elgible for an overall awards. They were the only car to be clean at the first timing point.

Most leading crews dropped only a matter of seconds at the first two controls, but all were significantly late at the third, which was at Pontyglasier. Collins/Collins were the best here, stopping the clock six seconds ahead of Richard Evans/David Evans (VW Golf GTi). This was to set the pattern for the night as these two crews were to fill the top two spots at the Finish.

At the end of the section Collins/Collins held a lead of 41 seconds, with Wayne James/Jenny James (Peugeot 205 GTi) now in second. Greves/Jones were in third, but they retired soon afterwards with a failed gearbox. Similar problems, a broken gerabox shaft, halted the Fiat Tipo of Gino Mangano/Dave Prout.

Evans/Evans were in fourth, more than a minute off the lead, but almost the same margin ahead of fifth placed Graham Hicks/Steven Hicks (Vauxhall Nova). The latter crew were to finish well down the order after picking up a fail for booking in early at the end of a Neutral in the second half.

Further down the order than expected was the Peugeot 205 GTi of Aled Richards/Gari Davies; they were in 19th position after having to retrace their steps to find a code board that they'd missed. Meanwhile, Geoff Williams/Delyth Brown (Vauxhall Nova) were 17th after a couple of time consuming wrong slots.

Six cars failed to make the end of the section, these included the Escort of Hefin Jones/Llinos Jones, who parked up with mechanical problems after picking up a puncture only a few miles into the event.

The second regularity had four timing points and took the route south from Dinas Cross to Wolf's Castle.

For the leading contenders only the first part caused them to lose time. Evans/Evans were best here, two seconds ahead of Ceri Jones/Jenny Evans (Peugeot 205 GTi), a bright spot for the latter crew, who declared that they'd only had a "so so" night; they finished in 13th place.

At Petrol, Collins/Collins held a lead of exactly a minute over Evans/Evans, with James/James in third, 1m 18s further back. Just three seconds seperated James/James from Dan Thomas/Nigel Williams (Peugeot 205 GTi), who were being hampered by a intermittently failing handbrake.

Neil Reed/Barry Davies (Ford Sierra) were outside the top twenty after picking up two punctures on one white, the incident cost them over 14 minutes. The Vauxhall Nova of Kevin Evans/Justin Summerfield was withdrawn at Petrol after the car's fuel pump failed.

Following the break, the third regularity, which had two timing points, was a short affair taking crews down to the Cleddau Estuary and past Picton castle. It was cleaned by the majority of the field.

Only one sector of the fourth and final regularity caused the leading crews to drop time, this part include an off road run at Parc-y-marl. Thomas/Williams were best here, seven seconds ahead of Jones/Evans and Andrew Lewis/Nigel Griffiths (Toyota Corolla), who tied for second best. Collins/Collins were fourth.

Neil Mathias/Andrew Phillips (Vauxhall Nova), who had been in tenth place at Petrol, hit a post on the Parc-y-marl white. They cut route and struggled to the Finish, but were OTL by the time that they got there.

Only a straightforward Standard Section, from Pany-y-Caws remained; it was cleaned by almost the entire field.

Collins/Collins therefore came home to a convining win, ending over a minute ahead of Evans/Evans, who were almsot eactly the same margin ahead of third placed Thomas/Williams. Huw Mathias/Lisa Burden (Vauxhall Astra GTE) finished in seventh place overall and first Novice, twelve minutes ahead of their nearest class rivals. The first Beginners home were Dennis Davies/Shon Rees (Peugeot 205 GTi).
