The 2004 winners, Kevin 'KJ' Jones/Dilwyn John (Ford Sierra 4x4) led the capacity 75 car field away from the Cardigan start for a demanding and closely fought 110 miles of competition. A significant non-starter was Daniel 'Lwni' Jones/Andrew McLachlan, who were due to line up at Car 4. The event was the third round of the Welsh Road Rally Championship.

The first regularity used the familiar roads through the Sand Pits and Cwm, finishing just outside Aberporth. Everyone dropped time at the first intermediate time control, but penalties here were scrubbed after Rhydian Rees/Jo Bond rolled their Peugeot 205 on the white through Troedyrhiw and blocked the track for the remainder of the field. This meant most of the field were clear of penalties at the end of the section, although three crews had picked up fails for missing to get a code board counter signed.

Regularity Two opened with a tight section through a series of tracks around Pensarn Ddu Uchaf; there was an ITC before the route regained the tarmac. The only car to drop under a minute here was the Escort of Huw Evans/Patrick Walsh; they were three seconds ahead of Gareth Evans/Eurig Evans (Ford Escort), with most leading crews not far behind.

The section continued and moved towards the coast, with two ITCs in the Hoffnant Valley. Most dropped just a handful of seconds at RITC3, but Roger Hicks/Mark Hamilton (Ford Escort) were delayed for three minutes when the Escort of Kevin 'Steaky' Morgan/Rob 'Sais' Richardson came to a halt with a failed diff.

Meanwhile Delfryn Owens/Jeff James lost two minutes when the alternator came loose on their Renault Clio RSi.

John Davies/Neil Bevan (Vauxhall Astra) were clear leaders at the halfway halt, which was after the end of the second regularity. They were ten seconds quicker than anyone else to ITC7, which was after a climb up the Cwmtydu hairpins. By Petrol, which was at Synod Inn, the reigning Welsh Champions were 12 seconds ahead of Jones/John, who in turn were 17 seconds in front of third placed Elgan Jones/Paul Bevan (Vauxhall Astra).

Cwmtydu claimed two notable victims, both with broken drive shafts; these were Steve Wood/Aled Richards (Vauxhall Astra) and Clive Greves/Rob Duke (VW Polo). Also out by this point was the Subaru Impreza of Adrian Jones/Dylan Jenkins, they withdrew after sustaining damage in an off.

The first ITC on the third regularity was to have a decisive effect on the overall result. The section started with a run through the lanes to the south of Llanarth, with the ITC being on the edge of the village. Davies/Bevan were penalised for arriving early, the navigator claiming that the marshal had timed them as they passed the control board rather than when he had presented his time card. They had been 14 seconds early, which translated to a 28 second penalty. This penalty was queried, but not protested, and remained in the final results.

Despite this upset, Davies/Bevan retained their lead through the section, finishing the reg with a lead over Jones/John of 25 seconds. One crew that was on a charge here were Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies (Ford Escort), they moved from sixth at Petrol to third at RF3.

The end of the section had used the white through Moelifor, with its notorious milk stand on the entrance, and also the tracks through Pisgah. Both Garyl Evans/Matthew Maidment (Vauxhall Astra) and Richard McLachlan/Eddie Clough (Peugeot 205) reported hitting a large rock on a white, this damaged the sump guard on the 205. Ian Orford/Peter Barnard (Proton Compact) lost a minute moving the rock out of the way.

The fourth section started north of Ffostrasol, then zig-zagged its way south until it almost reached Aberbanc, before heading back north via a few tracks to finish near Beulah.

Both of the leading crews dropped a single second at the first ITC, but Jones/John narrowed the gap to Davies/Bevan by 14 seconds at ITC12, which was at Gernos Farm. There was then a change of lead at ITC16, at Calderbrook, where the Sierra was 29 seconds faster than the Astra, giving Jones/John an advantage of 16 seconds with one section remaining.

Having been third at Petrol, Elgan Jones/Paul Bevan fell down the order after booking in almost two minutes early at RITC13, this added four minutes to their total; they finished in 14th place.

The battle for third was hotting up as Jones/Davies arrived at RF4 tied on time with Gary Jones/Steve Herbert (Toyota Corolla).

The section had seen the demise of Gareth Evans/Eurig Evans, who had been in fourth place at Petrol; their Escort had succumbed to a broken shaft. Also out at this stage was the Toyota MR2 of Dyfrig James/Martin Richards, which had its clutch fail. Fuel feed problems accounted for the Ford Sierra of Marc James/Owen Dodd. A loose dipstick allowed the Astra of Richard James/Eurig Davies to lose all its oil and they were also out.

The final section was relatively short, with just one ITC. It started to the west of Beulah and the ITC was at the end of the track through Trefaes Fach. Davies/Bevan were 13 seconds faster to the control, but this still left Jones/John with a lead of five seconds. This allowed them to come home to claim their second successive Bro Teifi victory.

Third place was also decided that this vital control, with Jones/Davies putting in the fastest time of all and beating Jones/Herbert by 13 seconds, this allowed the Escort crew to secure the final podium position. Merfyn Hughes/Graham Dance (Subaru Impreza), after an undramatic event, finished in fifth place.

The leading Semi-Expert crew were Hefin Jones/Llinos Jones (Ford Escort), who finished in tenth place overall. Tom Barber/Geraint Hands (Peugeot 309) won the Novice Class, being the only crew in that category to finish without a fail.
