After a storming drive in their Porsche 911, Richard and Katy Tuthill took a decisive win on the Bulldog Historic Rally, the final round of the Motoring News/Demon Tweeks Historic Rally Championship. The victory promoted Tuthill to second place in the drivers' series, as most other leading contenders, including title winner Des Nutt, gave the rally a miss.

The Bulldog Historic contenders ran in front of the main rally, using the same route but missing out the first two Hafren stages. Despite the heavy rain the stages remained smooth, however the final stage, a spectator special at Shrewsbury, was cancelled due to flooding.

Tuthill/Tuthill charged through the six stages, taking fastest time on all of them. After 58 stage miles they ended up over six minutes clear of the rest of the field.

The challenge for second place came initially from the Avenger Tiger of Allan Clark/Jim Neil, they were second quickest to Tuthill on the first five stages, before retiring on the penultimate stage, Dyfi Gartheniog. Geoff Stewart/Colin Thompson were also on the pace in their Porsche 911, before they picked up a puncture, which tore the tyre off the rim and caused them to go off the road in Stage 3, Taliesin.

Also on the retirement list were Graham Samuel/Tony Phillips, who put their Volvo Amazon off the road on Dyfi Main. While Theirry Dehaeck/Yves Haghedoooren inverted their Porsche on Dyfi Gartheniog. Meanwhile Christopher and Hilary Green withdrew their Cortina GT after its clutch failed.

Graham Waite/Gary Titmarsh made a steady start in their Volvo Amazon to take second place at the Finish, just under a minute in front of the Lotus Cortina of Mike Corns/Ana Goni. Dave Preece/Rowand Prentice were fourth, with Peter O'Neill/Peter White's Austin Healey fifth. David McErlain/Andrew Merifield completed the top six in their Porsche.
