205 Camsport Stages 2005

Tregaron Motor Club

3rd-4th September 2005

Clerk of the Course: Wyn Jones & Kath Rumney

Stages: 8 (35 Stage Miles)

Venue: Mid Wales Activity Centre

Starters: 45

Winners: Gareth Nutt/Kevin Haven (Peugeot 205)

Gareth Nutt/Kevin Haven took not only their first 205 Challenge win but also their first outright victory on the 205 Camsport Stages. The Tregaron MC event was contested exclusively by 205s and RWD Challenge BMWs. Crews tackled eight tarmac stages at the Mid-Wales Activity Centre, four on Saturday afternoon and four on Sunday morning.

SS1 saw a massive accident for Geno Cook/Tudor Jenkins who got out of shape on the downhill approached to the Ruins, they rolled seven times but both crew member escaped injury. Meanwhile Nutt had made his intentions clear by taking fastest time by 2 seconds from Chris Bayliss. These two drivers battled for the lead throughout the rest of the rally, Nutt was always in front but the contest was so close that the slightest error by one would have given the decisive break to the other. After the 35 stage miles they were separated by ten seconds.

Remarkably the top three positions remained unaltered from SS1 to the Finish. Ed Robinson held third throughout, he was never far off the pace and equalled the leader's times on a number of stages.

Steve Cressey won the battle of the BMWs and took fourth overall. Ciro Carannante won a close fight with Roland Llewellin to be second 325 home, Carannante snatching the position on the last stage.

Warren Fairbairn had been expected to be involved in the BMW lead battle, but an off on SS2 saw them pick up a stage maximum and they finished as sixth placed BMW.

Paul Rook won the 1400cc category and secured the category title for 2005. Andrew Chalmers had led the class after four stages, he fell behind Dark on SS5 and went off the road and out of the rally on SS6.

Two drivers were contesting the Beginners category, Tom Jones and Jez Rogers, finished on exactly the same penalties, the decision and category win going to Jones due to his SS2 time; the pair having taken the same time on SS1.

Top seed Tim Moffat had an unhappy event, he found his newly built engine lacking in power, the unit eventually failed on SS6. A puncture on SS1 and a roll on SS5 saw Ian Winstanley finish a lowly sixteenth, while Simon Goodwin survived a roll on SS3 only to complete the task properly on SS7.
