Clerk of the Course: Huw Phillips & Mark Lloyd
Route: 140 Miles
Maps: 130
Starters: 75
Winners: Tony Davies/Graham Dance (Subaru Impreza)
From the traditional Cilwendeg start venue, the Cattle Mart at Newcastle Emlyn, the 2005 event didn't give the 75 starters an easy introduction to the night - the opening five and a half mile section was an intricate affair and contained two Intermediate Time Controls. Everyone dropped time over it.
The section used the lanes and tracks immediately to the north of Newcastle Emlyn. At the end of it John Davies/Neil Bevan (Vauxhall Astra) had established a lead of eleven seconds ahead of top seeds, Tony Davies/Graham Dance (Subaru Impreza). Gareth Thomas/Aled Jones (Subaru Impreza) were third quickest; this established the pattern for the night as these three crews were to contest the top positions throughout the event.
The lead changed on the second regularity when Davies/Bevan missed a code board and had to retrace their steps to get the check; they lost 35 seconds and the lead to Davies/Dance, who now led by four seconds from Thomas/Jones. Davies/Bevan were now 23 seconds off first place.
An early casuality was the Impreza of Mark Williams/Paul Bevan which broke its gearbox.
After two comparatively short sections, the third regulatity was 45 miles long and took the route to the petrol halt at Candy Cross. There were ten ITCs plus the finish time control.
Davies/Dance extended their advantage over Thomas/Jones through the section, ending it with a lead of 26 seconds. Davies/Bevan were another minute further back and were in danger of being engulfed in a tight battle where Martyn O'Connor/Peter Collins (Vauxhall Astra) and Gary Jones/Steve Herbert (Toyota Corolla) were tied on a time eight seconds behind the erstwhile leaders.
The white approaching the quarry at Glogue had seen the VW Golf of Edryd Evans/Richard Briddon go off the road, putting them out. This incident delayed Owen Llwyd Edwards/Eurig Davies (Vauxhall Astra). Alan Gaunt/Dorian Evans (Peugeot 306) exited the rally when their engine ingested water.
Owen Turner/Andrew Dadswell (Rover Metro) blotted their copybook by booking in early at the mid-point Main Control, adding 11 fails to their total.
The second half consisted of just two sections, Reg 4 was 35 miles long, looping around the Preseli Mountains, and contained eight ITCs, while the final reg was 20 miles in length, but with a tight short five-minuter just before the Finish, which was at Llechryd.
Davies/Dance and Thomas/Jones traded times throughout the fourth section, with the crews arriving at RF4 with totals 13 seconds apart. Tomas/Jones were quickest on the final tight section, but Davies/Dance were only a second behind and came home with a victory margin of 12 seconds.
Davies/Bevan pulled clear of the fourth place battle and ended the night almost a minute ahead of O'Connor/Collins, but 44 seconds off the lead. Jones/Herbert fell back during the second half and were overtaken for fifth place by Hefin George/Daniel Thomas (Nissan Sunny) on the final section.
Previous Cilwendeg winners, Toby Adams/Byron Jones (Ford Sierra) finished in tenth place after they had the wipers fall off at one point.
Tim Hand/Steven Thomas (Vauxhall Astra) ended the rally with nine fails, but were the only Semi-Expert crew to make the Finish and won the class.
Three Novices reached the end, all had multiple fails, but Stephen Marks/William Harman (Mitsubishi Colt) took the class honours.
It had been a tough event, only 29 of the 75 starters made the finish.
