Clerk of the Course: Anthony Davies, Alun Davies & Glan Harbud
Route: 78 Miles
Maps: 145 & 146
Starters: 60
Winners: Martyn O'Connor/Dyfan Davies (Vauxhall Astra GTE)
The second running of the Classic Tracks was based at Llanybydder and offered its 60 starters, a capacity entry, 78 miles of competition. It was a daylight road rally, with the meat of the action taking place on a number of farm and forest tracks; these were linked by more relaxed public road sections. The whole event was completed within three and a half hours.
All competitive sections were regularities, with those on tracks timed at a 30 mph average, while the road sections had a 20 mph average. There was an ITC at the start and finish of each track.
The opening section started within a mile of the start, east of Llanybydder, and crews were faced with a one and a half mile climb up to Llygadenwyn and then Rhydybont Farm. Three cars were clean at the first ITC, these were Martyn O'Connor/Dyfan Davies (Vauxhall Astra), Kevin Morgan/Iestyn Leyshon (Subaru Impreza) and Phil Evans/Gethin Edwards (Ford Escort).
A number of crews picked up early penalties as they charged into the control without due regard for their target time; these included Mark Whitford/Sam Collis (Ford Escort) and Hefin George/Daniel Thomas (Nissan Sunny). Meanwhile John Davies/Neil Bevan (Vauxhall Astra) lost a minute and a half when the car cut out, they got going again, but a failed clutch stopped the Vauxhall Nova of Geoff Williams/Delyth Brown.
Competition continued with a road section which took the route to the second track; this was a slippery grass trail at Maesllan. Eight cleaned this one, these included O'Connor/Davies and Morgan/Leyshon.
There was a brief respite before the third track of the day, this was a demanding farm track at the Wern; everyone dropped time here. O'Connor/Davies were fastest, one second quicker than Morgan/Leyshon. Peter Collins/Joanne Collins (Vauxhall Astra) matched Morgan's time and were now in third place, having dropped one second at ITC1.
Davies/Bevan were in further trouble when grass was sucked into the breather box; they were eighteen minutes late at ITC5.
A six mile road sector took crews to the final track of the first section, this ran through Blaenwern. O'Connor/Davies lost the lead at ITC6, which was at the start of the section; they booked in a second early, with double penalties for early arrival this added two seconds to their total and allowed Morgan/Leyshon into first place.
Making up for their previous early penalties, both Whitford/Collis and George/Thomas cleaned the track, arriving at RF1 on time. Morgan/Leyshon extended their lead as Collins/Collins moved into second place; they were now four seconds behind the Impreza and three seconds ahead of O'Connor/Davies.
These three were well clear of the field, this was led by the Semi-Experts Alan James/Rhydian George (Peugeot 205 GTi), who were 32 seconds behind the leaders.
A non-comp took the route to the northern edge of Brechfa Forest. A tight run through the forest from Penygarreg to Tirlan, which included the Gwernogle double ford, saw everyone lose time. Carwyn Harris/Iwan Mayes (Ford Escort) were fastest, arriving a second early at ITC8. Collins/Collins were third fastest and moved into a seven second lead, with Morgan/Leyshon and O'Connor/Davies now tied for the runner up spot.
The latter two crews were clean at the next ITC, which was after a track through Fynnon Las; Collins/Collins were three seconds late, cutting their advantage to four seconds.
This section saw the retirement of Hefin George/Daniel Thomas, who had an idiotic spectator hit the back of their Sunny at the time control. Also out at this point was the Lada Riva of Andrew Blackburn/Gwawr Hughes; they hit a wall and broke a front wheel hub.
Out before this point were two Vauxhall Astras; Mike James/Jenny James, had the engine expire on their version, while that of Owen Llwyd Edwards/Eurig Davies had bent the sump. Also on the retirement list was the VW Polo of Clive Greves/Rob Duke, which had lost all the oil from its gearbox.
The section ended with a tricky triangle, with a PC, at Clyniau and then a rough rutted track to Bwlchclawdd. By RF2 Collins/Collins held a lead of four seconds over Morgan/Leyshon, while O'Connor/Davies were a second further back in third. Whitford/Collis were in fourth, 40 seconds off first place.
The route now moved to the north, with the short third section looping around Llanfiangel-ar-arth. There were two ITCs and the finish control. Everyone dropped time at RF3, which was preceded by a track through Pantyfen.
By the end of the section, O'Connor/Davies had moved into the lead, having dropped 24 seconds. Morgan/Leyshon, booked in early at one ITC and were then late at the next, giving them a total of 26 seconds for the section. The two crews were now only a second apart. Collins/Collins fell to third place, nine seconds off the lead.
After a Neutral which took the route through Capel Dewi and Ryhdowen, the fourth section began with a track through Ffos-Esgob. Everyone was late at the end of this, with the early runners struggling here as they cleared the surface for those later on. O'Connor/Davies extended their lead to five seconds, while Collins/Collins were the quickest of the three leading cars, and were now tied with Morgan/Leyshon for second place.
Arwel Phillips/Jonathan Hands retired their Peugeot 405 at this point with a broken driveshaft.
The section ended with a track through Pantmor, with everyone late at RF4, Morgan/Leyshon were fastest here, a second ahead of the leaders. The top six overall positions at this point were:
1. Martyn O'Connor/Dyfan Davies (Vauxhall Astra): 1m 49s
2. Kevin Morgan/Iestyn Leyshon (Subaru Impreza): 1m 54s
3. Peter Collins/Joanne Collins (Vauxhall Astra): 2m 04s
4. Mark Whitford/Sam Collis (Ford Escort): 2m 57s
5. Gavin Rogers/Carrie Rogers (Ford Escort): 3m 02s
6. Alan James/Rhydian George (Peugeot 205): 3m 27s
Whitford/Collis fell down the order at the beginning of the fifth regularity when they failed to get counter signatures for five code boards; they were eventually classified in 35th place - without the five fails, they would have been fifth.
The fifth section started at Blaencribor and used the two mile track through Ceginan. Of the top three, O'Connor/Davies were on time at ITC16, which was at the end of the track, while Collins/Collins closed to within four seconds of Morgan/Leyshon, who were struggling with a broken suspension on their Impreza.
There was then a tight trail through Cwmhyar to RF5 at Depot. Despite their mechanical problems, Morgan/Leyshon were quickest here, four seconds ahead of O'Connor/Davies, this put the Impreza 14 seconds behind the Astra, while Collins/Collins, who had struggled to RF5, fell back to be almost a minute behind the leaders.
Aled Jones/Gareth Thomas (Vauxhall Astra) were third fastest to RF5 and this moved them up to sixth in the overall standings.
The final section was in the Talgarreg area and included four off road sectors. The first and last of these were the only ones that caused the leading crews to drop time. O'Connor/Davies further consolidated their lead and came home 24 seconds ahead of Morgan/Leyshon, who were over a minute ahead of Collins/Collins by the finish.
Rogers/Rogers had closed to within 30 seconds of the third placed Astra by the end, while James/George completed the top five and secured the Semi-Expert Class Award. The Novice Class was won by Heilyn Thomas/Arwel Thomas (Ford Sierra), who were ninth overall.
Of the 60 starters, 42 made it to the Llanybydder Finish.
