After a number of previous attempts, Pete Tyson/Neil Harrison finally took a clear win on Spadeadam MC’s Countdown Navigational Rally in 2005.
The Carlisle based event used 125 miles of lanes in the Scottish Border region to create a challenging route. A mixture of plot & bash on fast flowing roads and effective pre-plot on tight twisty sections was more than enough to get a result.
Alex Willan/Graham Dance and Stephen Coombes/Paul Coombes tied for the lead at the Petrol halt on fourteen minutes. Willan/Dance eventually finished third after a number of wrong slots and a missed board. Coombes/Coombes went out soon after the restart with mechanical problems.
Tyson/Harrison were one minute behind these two crews at Petrol but then cleaned the second half to take a clear win. On only the driver's second rally, Allison Powell/Steve Head finished second and won the Newcomer Class. Fancied local crew Ed Dentice/Tom Wilcox had a fraught first time card but fought back in the second half, eventually taking third place.
Paul Schatz/Carol Alexander beat Dan Willan/Heather Grisedale to the Non-Expert class, after the latter had suffered overheating problems, due to a loose fan belt, on their Astra.
Andy Whittaker/Charlie Tynan withdrew after being stopped by the police and the navigator feeling unwell.
The Rocket Historic Rally, a round of the HRCR Tartan series, ran alongside the Countdown and was won by the Healey Sprite of Simon Parson/Trevor Cattermole. David Halsall/Mark Shepherd made it to finish in third place despite the dynamo on the Vovlo Amazon failing in the first half.
