Curtis-Bennett Rally 2003
Winners: Mike Biss/Ian Buxton (Vauxhall Astra Diesel Estate)

Mike Biss/Ian Buxton achieved a notable victory when they took their Vauxhall Astra Diesel Estate to first place on the CSMA’s Curtis Bennett Rally.

Based in Builth Wells, the event used some classic Mid Wales roads. Crews first tackled the lanes to the East of the Epynt Ranges, then moved onto the Brecon/Sennybridge area. There was then a dash across the Ranges themselves, with the rally finishing with the full Abergwesyn loop.

At the Finish the top four crews were separated by their times over the single timed to the second section, which was down the Devil’s Staircase on Abergwesyn. Biss/Buxton dropped just sixteen seconds, while their nearest rivals, Grant Parker/Iestyn ap Daffydd, indulged in a spin to come in eleven seconds down. Top seeds Dave Smith/Cath Woodman were just ten seconds further back in third.

Gary Jones/Andrew Card were the fastest crew of the night, cleaning the whole route including the tie breaker, however they were penalised thirty minutes for entering a control twice and withdrew from the event.

The leading Semi-Expert crew were Alan Thurbon/Lee Craker, who brought their Corsa into seventh place overall, while the leading Novices, Brian Agnew/Andrew Hunter, were two places further back.

The Curtis Bennett had to cater for a wide range of abilities and their was a class for Beginners, these crews were tackling their first full event. Competitors in this class were supplied with easier navigation than the other classes and therefore weren’t eligible for overall awards. The class was won by David Flowers/Ian Shanahan in their Mini.
