CSMA Curtis-Bennett Rally 2005

Civil Service Motorsport Association

21st/22nd May 2005

Clerk of the Course: Nigel Nelson

Route: 132 Miles

Maps: 161 162 & 1171

Starters: 33

Winners: Mike Biss/Ian Buxton (Holden Barina SRi)

Mike Biss/Ian Buxton took a clear win on the CSMA’s Curtis Bennett Rally, part of the club's traditional motorsport weekend.

The Abergavenny based event used a 132 mile route mainly in the Forest of Dean area.

A straight forward first half was aimed at the less experienced crews, as a result a dozen crews arrived at the petrol halt with clean sheets. However three decisive sections over Llanover Mountain sorted the competitors out.

Chris Smith-Bowen/Matthew Maidment finished the rally with least penalties, with a score of 1m23s, however they then found that they had been excluded for a give way offence.

This left Biss/Buxton clear winners, a repeat of their 2003 success, the last time the event had been run. A close battle for second place was won by Mark Robinson/David Powell, who beat Dean George/Andy Oakes by just twenty-one seconds. Robinson/Powell could have won, but missed a code board, this added five minutes to their total.

Adam Holder/Simon Harris finished in ninth place, but might have been higher if they hadn't mixed up a PC and a TC, they waited outside the former thinker than it was the latter and were then late at the following TC.

Run in sporadic torrential rain showers, the rally saw over a third of the starters fail to finish. Mick Wilcox/Sophie Wilcox retired with a burst hose, while Peter Collins/Joanne Collins were forced out due to mal-de-nav.
