The rally was split into seven regularity sections, three before Petrol and four after. The 'halfway' halt was also at Aberaeron and was taken at around the one-third distance. Heavy rain fell throughout the night.

The first competitive section started at Ciliau Aeron, then ran through Dihewyd and skirted Llanarth before finishing at Bwlch-y-fadfa. Regs 2 and 3 were shorter, the former was south of Synod Inn, while the third looped from Llanarth to Ffos-y-ffin, going through the Panteryrod white.

During the first half Gary Robins/Eurig Davies (Renault 5) retired with a failed engine, while broken exhausts stopped Simon Davies/Damian Summerfield (Vauxhall Nova) and Huw Mathias/Hefyn Thomas (Vauxhall Astra); Paul Davies/Melanie Hands (Vauxhall Astra GTE) were excluded after failing a noise test.

At Petrol John Davies/Neil Bevan (Vauxhall Astra GTE) led, but were only three seconds ahead of Tony Davies/Richard Evans (Subaru Impreza). Neither of these crews were to make the finish; Davies/Bevan went out after an accident and Davies/Evans suffered a broken exhaust.

This left top seeds Daniel Jones/Richard Maclachlan (Subaru Impreza) in the lead and they maintained their advantage to finish, ending over two minutes ahead of the remainder of the field, however they had picked up a wrong approach at one control, the resultant fail plunged them down to 32nd place.

The second half started at Aberarth and went via Cilcennin, Silian before the fourth section finished at Olmarch. The fifth reg began at Llangybi and, after a run around the Sarn Helen, finished near Cellan. This left two short section in the lanes between Lampeter and Ystrad Aeron, which was the site of the finish venue.

The attrition amongst the top crews continued, with Gary Davies/Aled Evans (Ford Escort), who had been in fourth at Petrol, going out when a brake pipe broke. Mark Daniel/Hywel Ifans (Ford Escort) had their engine fail, while a cracked sump stopped the Ford Sierra 4x4 of Kevin 'KJ' Jones/Dilwyn John.

Alan Gaunt/Dorian Evans (Peugeot 306 GTi-6) had been outside the top ten at Petrol, but the demise of a number of their rivals, and a well judged second half drive, saw them overhaul the Subaru Impreza of Adrian Jones/Dylan Jenkins over the last sections to take victory by eight seconds. Gareth Thomas/Aled Jones (Subaru Impreza) were only two seconds further back in third place.

The Semi-Expert Class was won by Eryl Evans/Gareth Evans (Nissan Almera GTi), who finished seven minutes ahead of their nearest class rivals. Ian Nicholls/Justin Belcher (Vauxhall Astra GTE) were equally dominamt winners in the Novice Class.

It had been a tough night, with only 41 of the 75 starters making it to the Finish.
