Starters: 53
Winners: Simon Harrison/Paul Holmberg (Ford Escort RS2000)
A healthy entry of 53 cars took the start of the Lancashire based G&P Memorial Rally. The field was led away by the 2004 winners, Simon Harrison/Paul Holmberg (Ford Escort).
The first half of the event centred around the tight twisty lanes of Map 97, using famous sections such as Foxes Pulpit, the Heights and the numerous loops around Killington.
Simon Tate/Richard Wilson were the first retirement of the night, their Citroen Visa cut out and wouldn't restart. The problem was eventually traced to a fault in the ignition wiring loom, but by that time too much time had been lost. A blown clutch put the VW Golf of Ed Dentice/Tom Wilcox out in the first half.
There were a number of incidents on the opening section. Myles Gleaves/James Chaplin (Peugeot 205) went off twice, losing around three minutes, this probably cost them top three finish; they eventually finished in fourth place. Dave Broadley/Dave Wilkinson (Lada Riva) side swiped a concrete post after just five miles and had to be towed out by a fellow competitor. They recovered to take the second placed Semi-Expert Award.
Also in trouble at an early stage were Ade Green/Mick Fern (Seat Ibiza); they overshot a tightening left hander, losing their spotlights and a lot of time. They went on to finish in twelfth place. Jonathan Bossen/Steve Prince put their Impreza on top of a garden wall and got no further.
Steve Head/Graham Raeburn (Vauxhall Nova) were the crew setting the pace and arrived at Petrol with what seemed to be a healthy lead; however, it was found that they had failed to get signatures at two time controls. This error cost them two fails and the win.
This meant that Merfyn Hughes/Graham Dance (Subaru Impreza) held the lead, but had Harrison/Holmberg close behind. Jason Stone/Dan Stone (Peugeot 205 GTi) were also in the hunt, but were to end their rally in a ditch on Littledale Fell.
The second half took crews south via Littledale Fell onto Map 102 with sections over and around the Trough of Bowland.
This was Harrison's home territory and there was no denying him and Holmberg the win; the pair ended the event over 90 seconds ahead of Hughes/Dance. Frank Evans/Dan Spittlehouse (Proton Compact) finished in third, five minutes behind the winners.
Terry Martin/David Taylor (Peugeot 205) and Mark Price/Brynmor Pierce (Subaru Impreza) both missed the same code board; the resultant fails dropped them well down the order.
The battle for the win in the Historic Category was a fight between two Mini Coopers. Michael Pedley/David Pedley took the win after James Tyson/Neil Harrison, the early leaders, retired at Petrol with a failed clutch. The Historic Rally was Round Five of the HRCR Nocturnal Championship and, unlike the main event, was timed to the minute.
After a slow start, and time lost retracing their steps to find a code board, Dan Willan/Heather Grisedale (Vauxhall Astra) fought back in the second half to take the win in the Semi-Expert Class. The Novice Class was won by Dave Gardner/Darren Taylor (VW Golf).
