Brynli Thomas/Brynmor Pierce made the best use of a combination of their Impreza’s traction and their local knowledge to take a comfortable win on Bala MC’s inaugural Gareth Hall Winter Challenge.

Snow fell shortly before the rally started, the skies then cleared and the freezing temperatures that followed made for treacherous conditions, especially in the Clocaenog area.
Thomas/Pierce were the class of the field all night, giving Pierce his first rally win. Merfyn Hughes/Gwawr Hughes took second place four minutes down on the winners, while Simon Harrison/Paul Holmberg were the first two wheel drive car home in third.
Gary Jones/Steve Herbert might have taken the runner up spot but an eight minute wrong slot on the last section, seven miles from the end, dropped them to tenth. Gareth Jones/Edryd Evans made exactly the same error and finished in twelfth.
In the treacherous conditions, John ‘Mark One’/Eurig Evans, put their Escort Van off the road on the first section; it took them 27 minutes to regain the tarmac and they withdrew. Baz Green/Rob Jones were also a victim of the icy conditions, hitting a wall and breaking their Peugeot 205's steering; this happened at a junction on a Neutral, just before the start of the sixth section. Meanwhile Ian Lloyd/Cyril Jones went off on the first white of the night and failed to finish.
Neither Dave Jones/Ian Vale nor Martin Lloyd/Lee Evans made it further than the first PC; the former going out with a burst hose on their BMW.
Thirty-nine crews made the finish, while there were 37 retirements.
