Starters: 68
Winners: Tony Davies/Patrick Walsh (MG Metro 6R4)
Brecon Motor Club's annual Epynt stage event, the Harry Flatters Rally, was based at the German Village, which was the site of the service area. Competitors faced a total of 18 stages; the first sixteen being relatively short, with the rally concluding with two marathon stages taking in most of the roads on the Ranges.
The event was a round of the Welsh Tarmac and Historic Championships, plus also the Rallysport Challenge 2005, the latter a ten round series consisting of asphalt rallies in Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Jersey - the Harry Flatters was Round 6 of the Challenge.
The first two loops comprised four stages each, the first starting on Gardiners Path and finishing at the top of the Steps. The next used the loop from Dixies around the Burma Road, before the third began on the Cellini Link and finished just before the Green Shed. The final stage of the loop had its start above the Irish Village and ran along the New Road.
Stages 9 to 12 and 13 to 16 were the earlier stages in the reverse direction. The final two stages were the same 9 mile test starting at the Drovers Arms end of the New Road, it went via Four Ways and the Burma Road, to finish in front of the German Village.
Before the first stage began Tony Davies/Patrick Walsh were in trouble, their Metro 6R4 developed a misfire as it was being warmed up. The problem was partly cured, but the car was two minutes late booking into the first Main Control, adding 20 seconds in road penalties to their total before they had even started.
Fastest over SS1 were Peter Lloyd/Graham Handley (Subaru Impreza); they were one second ahead of top seeds Eian Pritchard/Martin Jones (Subaru Impreza WRC). These two battled for the lead throughout the first four stages. Pritchard drew level with Lloyd after SS3, but the latter was one second quicker on SS4, so that was his lead at the first service halt.
Despite inappropriate tyres, Davies had taken fastest times on SS2 and SS3, this helped him recover from last place to fourth after SS4. John Bogie/David Paterson (MG Metro 6R4) were making their first appearance since a big accident on the Jim Clark Rally and held third place at this point, 16 seconds behind the leader and six seconds ahead of Davies.
Two leading runners failed to make it to First Service; Damian Cole/Ian Allsop had suffered a broken track rod arm on their Hyundai Accent WRC3, while John Stone/Lee Carter crashed their Metro 6R4 on the Cellini Track near the start of SS3.
Lloyd drew out a 20 second lead on SS5 after Pritchard indulged in a spin; this dropped the top seed to a shared second place with Bogie.
Davies now took fastest time on SS6 and the next four stages, which after SS10 moved him into the lead. By Third Service, after SS12, the Metro driver was seven seconds ahead of Lloyd, with Pritchard a similar distance behind Lloyd in third. By this point Bogie was almost a minute off the lead.
The key factor over the next loop of stages (SS13-16) was the brake problems that started to affect Lloyd's Impreza; this allowed Pritchard, who took fastest times on both SS13 and SS16, to grab second place. At the fourth service halt Davies led Pritchard by ten seconds.
There now just remained the two final long stages, with a service in between. Pritchard was fastest on both, but only reduced his deficit to Davies by four seconds, meaning that the Metro driver came home with a six second victory margin to claim his first win on the Epynt Ranges.
Hampered by locking brakes, Lloyd finished in third, 38 seconds off first place. Bogie ended in fourth, exactly a minute behind Lloyd. Chris Griffiths/Julian Russell (Darrian T90 GTR) completed the top five, they were the clear winners of Class 4.
Seventh place and first in Class 3 was taken by David John/Richard Burton (Ford Fiesta RWD), this was despite an off on SS17 that cost them 30 seconds. Once again, Brian Davies/Hu Kent (Toyota Corolla, took the Class 2 win, while Class 1 was won by Huw Benyon/Ken Gibbard (Vauxhall Nova), who ended the event seven minutes ahead of their nearest class rivals.
