Clerk of the Course: Wayne Jones
Route: 120 Miles
Venue: Epynt
Starters: 56
Winners: Martin Leonard/Kevin Chaffey (VW Golf GTi)
For the fourth time, the Holrus was run as a road rally confined to the the Epynt Ranges. The event consisted of two loops of the military training grounds. The Smithfield Garage in Builth Wells provided the location of the Start, Petrol and the Finish venue.
There were 100 miles of competition, with the first car leaving the Start at 17:30 and finishing at 23:15. A Novice event ran alongside the main field, but taking in just the first loop of Epynt.
The opening section started at the top of the Mabion Way and ran into the forest before taking the Quarry Road and running up and down Halfway, with the finish at Dixies. There were a dozen timing points and numerous three-metre controls.
The first control at which everyone dropped time was ITC5 in Mabion Forest, by this point John Davies/Neil Bevan (Vauxhall Astra) were in first place, three seconds ahead of Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies (Ford Escort). The positions were swapped at the next ITC when Davies/Bevan booked in seven seconds early.
Jones/Davies extended their lead as they entered Halfway Forest, but then the coil on the car failed and they lost over nine minutes changing the faulty part. Also in Halfway, Davies/Bevan went off the road and were over a minute and a half late at the final timing point at Dixies.
All this drama meant that at the end of the section Martin Leonard/Kevin Chaffey (VW Golf) held a lead of 43 seconds over Glyn Price/Iwan Jones (Ford Escort), while Steve Head/Stewart Merry (Vauxhall Nova) were in third, but almost two minutes off first place.
The second section ran to the top of the Dual Carriageway before taking Route 60, the Burmah Road and Cellini Track, and finishing at the bottom of the New Road Straight.
While Leonard/Chaffey added just 24 seconds to their total over the regularity, all others were counting the number of minutes that they had lost. The carnage was so great that by RF22 Davies/Bevan, despite their off, were back in second place, 3m25s behind the leaders.
Tim Evans/Alun Probert (Nissan Micra) were now in third; they were a minute off second place, but two minutes ahead of Brian Jones/Michael Hardwick (Ford Escort). Jones/Hardwick had been close behind Davies/Bevan, until engine problems caused them to lose two minutes at Davrian Bridge.
Head/Merry were the big losers on this section as they missed to find ITC14, which was located in a car park at the start of Route 60. They retired at Petrol as they struggled with the intense nature of the navigation.
The final section of the first half started at The Farm and took the public road past The Drovers Arms, before using the tracks either side of the Concrete Road.
Both of the leading two crews added two seconds to their penalty totals over the section and so Leonard/Chaffey arrived at Petrol with a substantial lead, while Evans/Probert had closed the gap to Davies/Bevan, but only by a second.
The second half loop was slightly shorter than the first; there was no use of Route 60 and only the northern section of Halfway was used, instead The Steps and Bamfords were included. Again, it was split into three sections, with the Quarry Road now being a time recovery.
Leonard/Chaffey continued their domination of the event, although Davies/Bevan chased them hard until three miles remained, at that point a fire started in the Astra's engine compartment and the whole car went up in flames. This dramatic conclusion allowed the Golf crew to come home with a victory margin of almost six minutes.
Evans/Probert finished in a clear second place, their second runner up spot in succession, following up their Greenleaves result from the previous weekend.
Jones/Davies, recovering from their earlier coil problems, put in the best performance of any crew over the final circuit and moved up from fifth at Petrol to third at the Finish, nine minutes behind the winners.
It was a good night for Epynt Motor Club as Jones/Hardwick, despite their engine woes, finished ten seconds behind Jones/Davies, meaning that the local club took second, third and fourth places.
Mike Morgan/Byron Jones (Ford Escort) had a miserable first half, suffering a puncture and missing a route check, before storming through the second half to move up from thirteenth at Petrol to sixth at the end.
The Semi-Expert Class was won by Aled Johnson/Meirion Rees (Rover 220 GTi), who finished in ninth place overall, while the victors in the Novice Class were David Evans/Rhys Watkins (Peugeot 205 GTi).
Winners in the Novice Rally were Keith Morgan/Richard Schofield (Citroen AX GT), who finished 13 minutes ahead of Reian Jones/Mike Stele Perkins (Seat Ibiza).
