Winners: Steve Cole/Bob Blows (Peugeot 205 GTi)
Steve Cole/Bob Blows took their fifth win of the season on North Devon MC’s Ilfracombe Rally.
The 140 mile event used the tight and twisty lanes in the Barnstaple area to put on a demanding test for the 43 starters. The rally had a dual permit with modern and historic sections.
By the quarter distance two crews were still clean of penalties, these were Roger Hunt/Graham Dance and Darren Dixon/Bob Jones. By the petrol halt Hunt/Dance had a clear lead, still having to drop any time. The rally then moved into the Hartland area, with the Master and Expert crews having plot ‘n bash navigation.
Hunt/Dance lost their chance of a win when they missed a code board, which flat on the ground, and incurred a five minute penalty, this dropped them to second place at the Finish. Cole/Blows had dropped three minutes by Petrol, but then got through Hartland with only an additional minute added to their score to seal the year with another win.
However second place was sufficient for Hunt/Dance to secure the HRCR Nocturnal Challenge, of which the Ilfracombe was the last round.
Dixon/Jones finished in third, while Mark Appleton/Anthony Preston survived an incident in which they bent the suspension on their Peugeot 106, to take fourth.
The leading Novice crew were Roy Gillingham/Peter Joy who finished in fifth place, just ahead of the second in class Adam Holder/Simon Harris.
Top seeds Andy Coshan/Phil Kendall had been in second place at the halfway halt but a problematic second half saw them finish outside the top ten. Jim Deacon/Dave Wilson were also in a strong position when they were forced out when their Escort lost its oil.
