Mel Harries Memorial Rally 2005

Sponsored by Marc's Motors & Sons

Ammanford Motor Club

2nd/3rd July 2005

Clerk of the Course: Rob Richardson & Colin Thomas

Route: 145 Miles

Maps: 146 159 & 160

Starters: 75

Winners: Nigel Nelson/Martin Saunders (Vauxhall Astra)

Nigel Nelson, with Martin Saunders on the maps, took his maiden rally win as a driver on the Mel Harris Memorial Rally, an event he’d won as a navigator eight years previously.

The Ammanford MC organised rally started and finished at the club’s home town but the 145 mile route included lanes to the north of Llandovery.

Ian Williams/Dan McLachlan and Manfred Kampschulte/Adrian Davies held the top two places at Petrol but neither made the Finish; Williams broke the diff on his Escort, while Kampschulte had his Impreza's clutch fail. This allowed Nelson, who had been in third place at halfway, to come through to take a very narrow win over the Corolla of Dai John/Paul Bevan. The two crews were separated by just six seconds at the end.

Aled Rees/Heulyn Phillips (Vauxhall Astra GSi) finished in third, although almost four minutes behind the leaders. Martin Leonard/Kevin Chaffey (VW Golf GTi) might have taken third, but a puncture on the final section cost them nearly four minutes and they finished in eleventh place.

Top seeds Martyn O’Connor/Peter Collins lost 20 minutes when the exhaust on their Astra came loose; they were then further delayed by the Peugeot 205 of Mike Roberts/Dai Roberts which had rolled on to its side; they had to wait for a sufficient number of crews to arrive to move the stricken car. O’Connor/Collins eventually finished in 29th position.

Heavy rain prior to the event made the going treacherous and led to one section being scrubbed after a track became waterlogged. In general the whites that were used were very rough and very muddy, with deep ruts.

Daniel Jones/Steve Herbert were early casualties of the conditions when they rolled their Escort after 20 miles. Sheered bolts on the rear axle stopped the Escort of Ceri Richards/Aled Jones.
