Mid Wales Clubman Stages 2005

Sponsored by Rally Marketing

Newtown & District Auto Club

26th June 2005

Clerk of the Course: Richard Edwards

Stages: 6 (43 Stage Miles)

Venue: Hafren, Sweet Lamb, Cymysgawen & Ceri

Starters: 89

Winners: Graham Middleton/John Morgan (Hyundai Accent WRC)

The Mid Wales Stages attracted an entry of 128 cars for the one day event. The competitors faced six stages totalling just under 43 miles. The Club Rally ran through SS3 to SS8, as SS1 and SS2 had been contested by the Historic Rally on Saturday afternoon.

The field was led away by 2004 BTRDA Champion, Graham Middleton, who, as usual, had John Morgan reading the pace notes in his Hyundai Accent WRC; they were hoping to repeat their 2004 success on the Mid Wales Stages, where they had been fastest on every stage.

From the Newtown base the route took crews to the northern end of Hafren for the start of the first stage, this used the outer tracks of Hafren North, finishing on the Miners’ Road, before a short non-competitive section led to the start of SS4, Nant Melen. This ran on the roads inside those used for SS3, finishing at Cwmbiga. These two tests were respectively 5.6 and 6.7 miles in length.

SS5 was Hafren South, it started at Pent-yr-Esgair and finished, after 5.85 miles, at Maesnant. Another short non-comp led to the longest stage of the day, a 13.2 mile test which started in Hafren before taking in the majority of roads in Sweet Lamb, finishing at Eisteddfa Gurig. There was then a welcome 40 minute Service at the RAC Car Park at Sweet Lamb.

After the break competition moved to Sarnau and a 5.1 mile stage at Cwymysgaden. Competitive motoring then concluded with a 4.4 mile stage at Ceri.

Middleton maintained his 2004 form by taking fastest time on the opening stage, SS3. The Hyundai was 24 seconds faster than the Subaru Impreza of Damien Cole/Paul Willetts, who, in turn, were five seconds ahead of the last minute entry Nigel Griffiths/Paul Morris, who were competing in a self built Group N Impreza.

Middleton extended his lead by 27 seconds on SS4, while Cole eked out another second from Griffiths. Already out by this point was the Mitsubishi Lancer E6 of Bob Morgan/Adrian Williams - the car suffered a failed differential. This was the latest in a series of retirements for Morgan; a broken gearbox had stopped him on the Wyedean and failed gearboxes had halted him on both the Somerset Stages and the Red Dragon.

There was drama on SS5 when Middleton suffered a puncture and had to drive for five miles on it; he lost 30 seconds to his rivals, but still held a lead of 17 seconds at the stage finish. Paul Walker/Vern Brown (Ford Escort Cosworth), who had been in sixth place after SS4, also picked up a puncture on the stage, they fell four places in the overall standings as a result.

The battle for the top two wheel drive competitor was closely contested with Tom Curtis/Dai Roberts (Peugeot 205 GTi), a 205 Scholarship challenger, was in sixth place, five seconds ahead of Geraint Mills/Jonny 'Tad' Evans (Opel Manta), who were just a second in front of Dave Brick/Rob Woodhouse (Ford Escort).

The 13 mile SS6, Esgair y Maesnant, made up almost a third of the competitive milage; it significantly rejigged the top ten places.

Despite a spin at the hairpin in the Sweet Lamb Bowl, Middleton was 42 seconds faster than anyone else and emerged from the stage with a lead of more than a minute. Griffiths was second quickest and passed Cole for second place, arriving at Service with an advantage of 13 seconds.

Brick was the fastest in the 2WD battle, moving ahead of both Curtis and Mills, the latter being slowed by a broken panrod tower, which got strapped up at Service.

Mid Wales Stages 2005

Also on a run of bad luck on recent events were Dave Jenkins/Graham Cox; a blown turbo had caused their retirement on the Wyedean and then broken suspension had led to a non-finish on the Welsh International. They were in fourth place after SS5 on the Mid Wales Stages, but retired on SS6 when their Ford Escort WRC suffered a transmission failure.

With Jenkins' retirement, David Hughes/Stephen Marshall moved into fourth place; ex-motocross rider Hughes had made the journey from Scotland to test out his newly acquired Mitsubishi Lancer E8. Paul Walker recovered from his earlier strut problems and moved back to fifth place, 14 seconds behind Hughes.

Notwithstanding a persistent event-long misfire, Andrew Graham/Peter Brennan (Ford Escort Cosworth) were in ninth place at Service, having passed the AB Motorsport Peugeot 205 GTi of Simon Moore/Huw Mathias on SS6; Moore had caught and been held up by a slower car from the Sweet Lamb Bowl.

Moore was holding second place, behind Curtis, in the 205 Scholarship at this point; this was the order in which they would finish. Fellow Scholarship contenders Chris Reid/Dylan Evans had rolled in the dust on SS6, but continued and finished fifth in the category, just three seconds behind fourth placed Gaz Carless/Dave Stocking. Jody Bowcott/Mike Hart finished third in the Scholarship, despite their car continually jumping out of gear. Mike Roberts/Phil Morgan retired their 205 at Service with clutch failure.

In the 205 Challenge, 18 year old Ed Robinson, who had John Youd on the pace notes, had led initially, holding a narrow four second lead after SS5. However, Robinson was overhauled on the long SS6 and Philip McVay/Nick Cadwallader took the lead, with Chris Bayliss/Mark Mason seven second behind in second. McVay maintained this lead until the final test when his 205's engine failed and he was out. Bayliss was left to take the Challenge win, his victory margin over Robinson being 21 seconds. Ian Winstanley/Neil Bye had been expected to go well, but a blown head gasket put them out early on.

Brian Smullen/Padraig Hornett who were competing in the Irish 205 Championship, under the watchful eye of Mitsubishi works driver Rory Galligan, ended their rally in the undergrowth on SS6.

Will Onions/Tim Hobbs were an early retirement, their Escort Cosworth going out with a broken diff. A failed driveshaft on their Vauxhall Nova caused the demise of Gareth Edwards/Stuart Drake, while the similar car of Gareth Hockley/Jess Hockley suffered an engine failure. None of these made it as far as Service.

The event moved away from the Hafren/Sweet Lamb area for the final two stages, the penultimate test being at Cymysgawen. The top three were the fastest three through the 5.1 mile stage, with Middleton eight seconds ahead of Griffiths, while Cole was ten seconds off the leader. Equalling Cole's time was the Impreza of Paul Pritchard/Huw Lewis, who hadn’t set any top 20 times up to that point; they went on to roll in Ceri, but completed the event in 24th place overall.

Dave Brick continued his charge up the order on SS7, moving ahead of Paul Walker, for fifth overall, but only with an advantage of two seconds.

Graham Middleton completed the rally by taking his fifth fastest time of the day on the final stage, 4.4 miles in Ceri. This meant that he came home with a winning margin of 1m29s. Nigel Griffiths completed a trouble free run to take the runner up spot, 22 seconds ahead of Damien Cole. David Hughes just held off a late charge from Paul Walker to retain fourth place, but Walker’s speed over Ceri did see him pass Dave Brick and secure the top score in the Welsh Stage Championship.

Brick did take the 2WD honours, finishing 12 seconds ahead of Thomas Curtis and 19 in front of Geraint Mills; these three filled sixth, seventh and eighth overall in the final standings.

After his strut problems earlier on, Peter Beards was fourth fastest on SS6, fifth on SS7 and third on SS8; this pushed him back up to 14th place overall. In contrast, Tim Jones/Don James were lucky to make the Finish after their Escort’s gearbox started to fail on the Ceri stage; they were classified in 11th place.

As well as the 205 Scholarship and 205 Challenge, the Mid Wales Stages was also a round of the BMW RWD Challenge, another contest from the irrepressible Pat Flynn. Warren Fairburn/Derek Miller (BMW 325i) had been the early pace setters and had been ninth overall after SS5. Unfortunately, a broken engine mounting put an end to their rally on SS6. The same problem halted the BMW of Pete Jackson/Kieron O’Neill. This allowed Steve Cressey/Ben Cressey (BMW 325i) to come through and take the category win, with Martin Bradley/Gordon Bradley (BMW 325i) in second place.

There were five contenders, four Micras and a Nova, in the F1000 Championship. Series leader Tristan Dodd (Nissan Micra) was in front after three stages, but on the long SS6 Jamie Edwards (Nissan Micra) got in front. Edwards maintained this lead until the end, as Dodd rolled in Ceri and burnt out the clutch attempting to regain the road. This result moved Edwards to the top of the championship table.

MID WALES HISTORIC STAGES

The Mid Wales Historic Stages consisted of eight stages, with the first two, both in Hafren Forest, being contested on Saturday evening, before six further tests filled the Sunday schedule.

Historics

There was a close battle for victory in the Historic category of the Mid Wales Stages, with Patrick Watts/Elgan Davies (Sunbeam Tiger) leading Steven Smith/John Nichols (Porsche 911) for most of the event. However, Watts/Davies went off the road on the penultimate stage, Cymysgawen, and lost 30 seconds. This indiscretion allowed Smith/Nichols, who had been fastest on all the Sunday stages, through to take the win by 11 seconds. Watts/Davies did enough to just hold off Dessie Nutt/Geraldine McBride (Porsche 911) for second place.

Post Historics

David Stokes/Ian Oakey (Ford Escort RS) were the early leaders in the Post-Historic category; they had been fastest on all of the first three stages, but then clutch failure put them out. This left Jeremy Easson/Den Golding (Ford Escort RS1600) with a substantial lead, especially as the only other challengers, Dominic Frattaroli/Wyn Thomas (Datsun 240Z), also went out at the same point as Stokes.

Classics

After a run of retirements, Gareth Lloyd/Ryland James (Ford Escort RS2000) took a clear win in the Classic category, taking fastest time on all bar the opening stage. Martin Freestone/Chris Heyes (Ford Escort RS1800) had been quickest on SS1, but then fell back and were 35 seconds behind the winners at the Finish.
