Morecambe Road Rally 2003

Sponsored by Mitchells of Lancaster

Morecambe Motor Club

16th/17th August 2003

Clerk of the Course: Ashley Hodge

Route: 140 Miles

Maps: 97 & 102

Starters: 20

Winners: Carl Hawkins/Iain Tullie (Vauxhall Nova)

It was yet another victorious night for Carl Hawkins/Iain Tullie, when they won the Morecambe Road Rally.

The event used 140 mile route; eight of which were on farm tracks. Despite being a round of the ANWCC Championship, the rally only attracted 20 entries, of these, only 10 made the Finish.

Simon Cottrell/Jez Harris debuted a newly acquired Escort RS2000. They held the lead at Petrol, but thirty miles after the restart the car developed gear selection problems and they descided to save the gearbox and cut route to the Finish. They were classified in ninth place.

This allowed Hawkins/Tullie to make it their fifth win of the season and for Tullie, it was is seventh victory. They were the only crew to complete the route clear of a fail.

Twelve minutes and one fail further back was the Opel Kadett of Clive Sissons/Derek Bateson, who took the runner up spot. The time penalties for John Livermore/Fred Bent (Vauxhall Astra) were over seven minutes less than those collected by Sissons, but they had two fails and so were classifed third.

The North Walian crew of Iwan Griffith/Gwawr Hughes were hunting ANWCC Championship points and finished in fifth place.

Steve Head/Simon Bentley had been expected to challenge for the win, but ended their rally with their Suzuki Swift in a ditch.
