Nick Kelland/Roger Gillard were declared winners of South Hams MC’s Nightmare Rally, after five crews finished the 150 mile rally clean of any penalties. The matter was decided on engine capacity, with Kelland’s Peugeot 106 taking the top prize.
Richard Endean, who had won the Harvest on a similar tie break, had to be content with the runner up spot on this occasion. Ben Greenfield/Doug Kingsley were placed third and took the Masters Class, while Richard Cann/Mark Sheppard were the leading novices, they were also clean in fifth.
Phil Harris/Andy Ballantyne were left ruing a single dropped minute on the event's only plot 'n bash section. Their Daihatsu Avantzo had been hampered by gear linkage problems on the vital sector. Without the minute penalty they would have been clean with a 695cc engined car.
Nearing the end Roger Hunt/Bob Blows and Andy Hewitt/Nigel Hewitt were two other crews clean of penalties, that is until a secret check on a triangle near Ermington, both missed it, the resultant five minute penalty dropped them down the order.
Punctures scuppered the chances of both Nick Evans/Nigel Nelson (Toyota Corolla) and Jim Cassidy/Chris Crocker (Peugeot 205) early in the proceedings.
Some confusion was caused around Broadhemptson where arrows for a motocross event led some crews to go around in circles.
The Peugeot 205 of Paul Freeth/Derek Mines ended the rally on its roof.
