Oaks Trophy Rally 2005

Sponsored by Rally and Competition Equipment

Ecurie Royal Oak MC

3rd/4th September 2005

Clerk of the Course: Marcus Watmough & Simon Cottrell

Route: 120 Miles

Maps: 118 & 119

Starters: 36

Winners: Rob Chalmers/Ric Chalmers (Peugeot 309 GTi)

Rob Chalmers/Ric Chalmers (Peugeot 309 GTi) took a clear win on their home event, Ecurie Royal Oak’s Oaks Trophy Rally. Crews tackled a 120 mile route, which used some unfamiliar roads in Staffordshire and Cheshire, as well as more well-known Derbyshire tracks. The latter sections were badly affected by fog.

The Chalmers brothers stamped their authority on the event by taking fastest time by over a minute on the first section, they led through to the finish. John Wilkinson/Roger Hage (Mitsubishi Lancer) held second at the halfway point but fell back to fourth in the foggy second half. This let Simon Harrison/Paul Holmberg (Ford Escort RS) through to second place and Nick Topliss/Mick Fern (Vauxhall Nova) into third.

Mark Whitford/Sam Collis (Ford Escort RS2000) would have taken third but picked up a fail for a booking in early at a time control. Jason Stone/Daniel Stone withdrew after missing the very first ITC. Michael Pedley/David Pedley (Ford Escort RS2000) had to pull out after the driver pulled a muscle in his back as he yanked up the handbrake; he was in too much pain to continue.

Tim Cooper/Owen Dodd (Ford Escort RS2000) had matched the winners' pace on the opening section, but then their car lost all its oil.

Mei Jones/Michael Hughes retired after their Vauxhall Astra developed a misfire and they damaged a strut. Locked rear brakes caused the retirement of Nigel Wright/Andrew Hughes' Vauxhall Nova GTE, while Karl Ruijsenaars/Herman Ruijsenaars put their Hillman Imp off the road and bent its steering.

Russ Smith/Dan Harrison finished in 16th place after the gear linkage on their Peugeot 205 GTi was damaged and they had to complete the event stuck in third gear.
