Venue: Trawsfynydd Ranges

Starters: 50

Aberystwyth & District Motor Club ran their first event at the Trawsfynydd Ranges with the support of Camsport. There were 12 stages, split into four sets of three stages each; there was a service between each loop. It was bright and sunny throughout the day.

The event attracted 50 entries, 21 of these were contesting the F1000 Championship. To allow contenders in this series to gauge their performance two celebrity drivers took part as well, these were Geoff Jones, who was partnered by Shelley Rogerson, and Craig Middleton, who had Kirsty Riddick in the left hand seat. Both crews were using Nissan Micras.

The field was led away by the Escort of Steven Hughes/Julie Hughes, the winners of the North Wales Car Club event at the same venue the previous year. They and second seeds, Carwyn Ellis/Edgar Jones, shared fastest time on the opening stage.

Immediately in trouble was Car 3, the Vauxhall Nova of Gavin Edwards/Dylan Jones; the car cut out and by the time it had been fixed the crew were over the time limit at the stage finish. They reemerged on SS7 and took the win in the Trophy Rally, which was run over the second half of the event.

Hughes/Hughes took a clear lead that they weren't to lose on SS2; they finished the test that ran from the forest end straight through to the opposite entrance. Ellis/Jones were now three seconds off the lead and had Geoff McQuilling/Iolo Jones (Honda Civic) just a second behind.

The top seeds were quickest again on SS3, which started at the road end and ran into the Parade Ground, however, once again, their time was matched by Ellis/Jones. This meant that at the first service halt Hughes/Hughes held a lead of three seconds over Ellis/Jones, with McQuilling/Jones eight seconds off first place. Edwards/Jones were the only retirement of the first loop.

As expected Geoff Jones set the pace in the F1000 category, although Simon Povey/Simon Davies (Nissan Micra) were matching the leader's speed, including taking the same time on the opening stage.

The second loop of stages was an exact repeat of the first loop. Again, Hughes/Hughes were quickest, but only a second ahead of Ellis/Jones, with McQuilling/Jones and Ken Pugh/Gwawr Hughes (Talbot Sunbeam) not far behind.

SS4 had to be stopped when the Nova of Nick Giles/Glenys Giles crashed heavily on the run down past the quarry. Four cars were given notional times due to being delayed by the incident.

McQuilling took fastest time on SS5, while Ellis was quickest on SS6, however Hughes was second on both. This meant that at the halfway halt Hughes held a lead of five seconds over Ellis, with McQuilling eight seconds further back.

Three more cars joined the retirement list on the second loop; these were Myfyr Owen/Geraint Jones (Ford Focus), who had turbo problems, a blown engine stopped the Astra GTE of Lee Hampshire/Will Rowlands and a broken throttle caused the demise of Matt Gregory/Robert Milligan's Peugeot 205.

SS7 started in the Parade Ground and finished at the road end, before SS8 ran from the road to the forest end. SS9 took cars back to the service area. Hughes was fastest on all three and extended his lead to nine seconds by the final break. Geoff Jones still led the F1000 battle, but Simon Povey was only nine seconds behind.

The final three stages were a repeat of the previous three. Ellis/Jones matched the leaders' times on SS10 and SS12, but lost a second on SS11, thus Hughes/Hughes came through to claim the win with a victory margin of eleven seconds.

Disaster struck for McQuilling/Jones on the final stage; they picked up a puncture and lost over a minute to the leaders. They fell to eighth in the final classification.

The big winners on SS12 were Kevin Jones/John Davies (Ford Escort); they matched the fastest time and moved from fifth to third place as a result; meaning that Escorts locked out all the podium positions. Pugh/Hughes came in fourth and took the 1600cc Class win.

Geoff Jones was the fastest F1000 contender, finishing in sixteenth place overall, but had Povey/Davies only nine seconds and one place behind.
