The Rhug Estate, near Corwen, provided the start venue for the PK Memorial, with 75 cars lining up to take the start of this ANWCC and AWMMC counter.

PK Memorial Rally 2005

The field faced a 130 mile route in the traditional PK area, with competition commencing not far from the start, at Cymro Gate. A fairly easy beginning took the route to the west of Llandrillo before the most decisive sector of the night was tackled, this was in the forest to the south-east of Llandderfel. The route entered the woods at Tyddyninco, regained the tarmac at Caecynddelw, then turned left at the B-road, where there was an ITC, then re-entered the forest for a loop around Cefn Coch. There was a second ITC before the end of the track.

The top seeds and 2004 winners, Tony Gush/Gareth Price (Peugeot 205 GTi), blasted the opposition here; they dropped 59 seconds, while their nearest challengers, Baz Green/Rob Jones (Peugeot 205 GTi), were on 2m 40s.

There were a couple of retirements on the section; Huw Myfyr/Gwawr Hughes severely damaged their VW Golf after hitting a tree, while Simon Harrison/David Pedley (Ford Escort RS2000) withdrew after the driver became unwell.

There was a long first half which took in the critical opening regularity, which was then followed by five standard sections, with most TCs timed to the minute. Petrol was taken at Glasfryn.

By the time that crews reached the halt Gush/Price had extended their lead to over two minutes, with Green/Jones in a clear second place, over a minute ahead of Mark Whitford/Mick Fern. The latter pair had survived an off at the infamous 'Gorse' section just before the halt. Unfortunately, they were to retired soon after the restart when the engine failed on their Escort. A blown engine had already stopped the Peugeot 205 GTi of Steven Roberts/Paul Roberts.

A more serious crash totalled the Subaru Impreza of Mark Price/Brynmor Pierce, who went off on a fast 60 right near Hendre Arddwyfaen.

There was already a high attrition rate, amongst those out of the running were two Peugeots that failed to make the halfway halt, these were the 205 of Dave Fuller/Carwyn Evans, which broke a drive shaft, and the similar car of Mark Jones/Warren Cardwell, which had its sump guard break.

The second half of the event was shorter and, for leading crews, not too demanding. It was largely within, or just south, of the Clocaenog Forest, and it was split into three sections.

Green/Jones narrowed the gap to the leaders by 17 seconds, but were still 1m49s behind at the end of the event. Thus Gush/Price held on to make it a PK Memorial double.

After Whitford's retirement, Andy Sheppard/Patrick Walsh (Ford Escort), who hadn’t competed together for some time, came through and took third place, although 4m21s behind the winners.

Mark 'GT' Roberts/Steve Price (VW Golf GTi) were well ahead in the Expert Class; they had been in eighth place at Petrol, and, despite having a wheel bearing fail towards the end, moved up to fifth place at the Finish. They only missed out to Steve Head/Graham Raeburn (Vauxhall Nova GTE) for fourth overall on a tie break.

Aled Owen/Gareth Jones (Seat Ibiza GTi) finished in thirteenth place and took the Semi-Expert Award; they ended exactly a minute ahead of their nearest rivals, Arwel Thomas/Ianto Fon Jones (Vauxhall Nova). The leading Novice crew were Phil Evans/Richard Morris (Ford Escort), they were 20 minutes clear of the second placed Novice.

There was a high attrition rate, with only 37 of the 75 starters making the Finish, this was largely due to heavy rain during the event which made the roads extremely slippery.
