Rali Llyn 1999

Sponsored by Express Motors Commercials

Harlech & District Motor Club

27th/28th March 1999

Clerk of the Course: Ian Williams

Route: 140 Miles

Maps: 123

Starters: 70

Winners: Steven Roberts/Alan Jôs (Ford Escort)

Steven Roberts/Alan Jôs take their second successive victory on Harlech MC's Rali Llyn; for Jôs it was his fourth straight win on the North Walian road rally. However he made his job harder by booking in a minute early at a regularity control and the final result had eventually to be decided on a tie break.

Rali Llyn 1999

Ian Jones/Alan Williams had led at Petrol but eased off to conserve their newly reshelled Peugeot in the second half. Unfortunately for them this allowed Roberts/Jôs to claw back enough time to be level at the Finish. The 1998 victors took the win on the basis of the least penalties dropped to ITC1.

The Rali Llyn demonstrated the popularity of road rallying in north-west Wales, with a capacity 70 car entry and large crowds of all ages spectating. The 140 mile route was based entirely within the Llyn peninsula, taking crews right down to its furthermost tip at Aberdaron

For Jason Hardy/Elfyn Richard it was to be a short event - the gearbox on their Golf failing after just seven miles. The Toyota Corolla of Arwel Griffith/Baz Green succumbed to similar problems before Petrol, the duo having led the event after the opening regularity section. Kelvin Evans/Iestyn Williams looked set for a top five place but dropped to 24th after booking in early at a control in the second half.

Kevin Ikin/Rob Jones, finished fourth despite their Escort suffering from clutch problems in the second half. The result gave Ikin the lead of the North Western Championship, as most of his rivals gave the event a miss.

The Semi-Expert Class was won by Geraint Bowness/Arwel Jones, who brought their Peugeot into eighth overall. While the leading novices were Raymond Thomas/Alan Davies who were twelfth in their Metro.
