Rali Llyn 2004

Sponsored by Express Motors Commercials

Harlech & District Motor Club

27th/28th March 2004

Clerk of the Course: Chris Evans

Route: 140 Miles

Maps: 123

Starters: 74

Winners: Gerallt Davies/Owen Dodd (Ford Escort)

Carwyn Evans made it two wins in a month by finishing first on the Rali Llyn, on this occasion he was the winning driver, he’d previously won the Rali Gogledd as a navigator. Evans was partnered by Alan Jôs, who took his fifth win on the Harlech & District MC event.

As ever, the Llyn used a tight and twisty route, all within the peninsula. Starting near Pwllheli, the first sections ran north as far as Penygroes, before cutting back south-west to the Petrol halt at Llanbedrog. The second half circled around the lower part of the Llyn, then headed back up on the northern coast to finish at Edern.

Top seeds, Gerallt Davies/Owen Dodd, put their car off the road in the first half; they continued, and would have taken second place, but were excluded at the Damage Control. Keith Parry/Lee Evans (VW Golf) were also thrown out for the same reason.

Evans/Jôs led from the first selective and were never headed. Elfyn Richards/Daniel Richards moved up from fourth place at Petrol to take the runner up spot, demoting both Dewi Williams/Michael Evans and Eifion Thomas/Aled Pennant one position each in the process. Thus there was a Peugeot 205 GTi 1-2-3-4.

1st Semi Experts: Bryn Jones/Dewi Gwyn Roberts (Ford Sierra)

Bryn Jones/Dewi Gwyn Roberts (Ford Sierra) were the clear winners of the Semi-Expert class finishing in fifth place. The winning Novices were Richard Parry/Michael Hughes (Peugeot 205) who were thirteenth.

John 'Bont' Roberts/Alan 'Fanta' Williams struggled from the start with brake problems on their Subaru Legacy, a problem that eventually caused their withdrawal at Petrol.

Dave Jones/Baz Green retired in the first half after splitting the sump on their BMW 323i. Mei Jones/Steve Herbert stopped with engine problems at the end the first selective, a section that passed the driver's home.

Stephen Edwards/Heath Griffiths (Peugeot 309 GTi) had stopped to note down a code baord, when they were hit by the Escort of John Baines/Andrew Baines. The incident led to the retirement of both cars.

Stuart Kelso/Eilir Jones (Peugeot 205 GTi) missed out on a top ten finish after a misplot led to them getting a wrong approach at a time control.
