Clerk of the Course: Dan Holley
Stages: 7 (45 Gravel Stage Miles)
Venue: Epynt, Halfway & Crychan
Starters: 78
Winners: Julian Reynolds/Ieaun Thomas (Ford Focus WRC)
Julian Reynolds/Ieaun Thomas took their ex-Carlos Sainz Scholarship Focus WRC to a clear win on Amman & District MC's Red Kite Stages. Reynolds had entered the event as an opportunity to learn about the new car in actual competition and it proved to be a very successful lesson. He took fastest time on six of the seven stages and finished the rally almost two minutes ahead of the field.
The Red Kite had been expected to be a battle between Reynolds' Focus and the Hyundai Accent of Graham Middleton, however power steering failure meant that the reigning BTRDA Champion was unable to start the rally.
Robert Swann held second place after two stages but an off on SS3, where they lost six minutes, put him out of contention and gearbox problems on SS5 put him out of the rally.
Young Stuart Jones eventually took the runner up spot after a impressive performance in his first outing in the Mitsubishi Evo8. His father, Mick Jones, had held second place until SS6, but then gear selection problems saw him fall, not only behind his son, but also behind a hard charging Nigel Griffiths, the latter sneaked through to take third by nine seconds at the Finish.
Andrew Haddon/Daniel Maclachlan were debutting a newly acquired Subaru Impreza. The driver declared the car to be "an awesome bit of kit". They finished in sixth place, two seconds ahead of the similar car of Damien Cole/Andrew Card.
The first two wheel drive car and historic car home was the Escort RS2000 of Mark Solloway/Mark Crisp, the Historic Rallysport proprietor finishing in ninth place overall.
The Red Kite was the second round of the Peugeot 206 Winter Cup and the category was dominated by returnee Richard Sykes, who was partnered by 2004 Champion co-driver Richard Edwards. The pairing won all seven stages and finished 90 seconds ahead of series leader Mike O’Brien. O'Brien having lost time on the opening test after the car cut out.
Neil Andrew rolled his Sierra on SS1 causing a delay for a number of crews and resulting in a notional stage time being given for most competitors.
James Belton took the over 2000cc class win, just ahead of Daniel Jones, the latter benefiting from the SS1 problems and notional time as he had suffered a broken torsion bar on the test.
There was a tight tussle for the Class 3 win, with Stuart Clarke/Cliff Simmons (Escort) beating Stuart Thomas/Mark Kehrein (Escort RS) by 21 seconds. Clarke having indulged in a spin and stalled engine on SS1.
As well as Swann's accident, Stage 3, Route 60, saw a number of other incidents. Aled Evans/Tudor Jones rolled their Ford Sierra; they took a stage maximum, but repaired the damage and continued to the Finish. Less fortunate were Dave Brick/Bob Woodhouse, they retired their Escort after an off. Both Stuart Jones and Mick Jones spun on the stage, but still shared the honours for fastest time after Reynolds had stalled his Focus on the start line.
There was an extensive retirement list; Callum Guy/Andy Bull withdrew with transmission problems on their Lancer Evo7 at the second service halt. Gearbox maladies accounted for both the Impreza of Andy Williams/Bradley Magnus and the Escort of Steve Finch/Stanley Graham. Meanwhile broken diffs forced out both Polli Patti/David Gambling (Escort) and Ed Lloyd/Eric Tong (Triumph TR7 V8).
There were 55 finishers from the 78 starters.
