Deian Rees was hoping to make it a hat trick of wins as navigator on the event, however he and driver Elgan Jones failed to make it as far as Petrol after their Astra's radiator ruptured on the fourth section. Alyson Acreman/Byron Jones were also an early retirement; they picked up punctures on the first section.

With a pre-plot route there were over twenty crews still clear of penalty at the halfway halt, however there was to be a short plot and bash tie decider early in the second half, this started near Llangwyryfon. Times dropped here decided the final top ten places.

Gaunt/Evans emerged from the vital section just two seconds faster than the Sierra of Huw James/Neil Spiers. Thirty seconds further back were Huw Evans/Eryl Rees, the navigator making an impressive return after a long layoff from rallying.

Kevin Ikin/Chris Rowlands were the top scoring North Western Championship contenders in ninth; the result allowing Ikin to close the gap on runaway series leader Paul Holmberg, who non-started. The Semi-Expert class was won by Brian Harrison/Clifford Washbrook, while the Novice award went to the Hyundai of Rhydian Jones/Christopher Winn.

The Standard Production category fell to the eighth-placed Toyota Corolla of Geraint Davies, who was navigated by the newly married Sarah Gluyas, nee Preece. Sarah's husband Tim had a less successful night; he was naviagting for Sarah's brother, Richard, they picked up three fails and ended up in 28th place.
