Clerk of the Course: Kevin Hutchings
Stages: 8 (44.8 Stage Miles)
Venue: Sweet Lamb & Hafren
Starters: 43
Winners: Jon Ingram/Shaun O'Gorman (Ford Focus WRC)
After a hesitant start, in snowy conditions, Jon Ingram/Shaun O'Gorman charged through to take a clear win on Telford AC's Tolputt Keeton Winter Stages at Sweet Lamb.
Ingram, on only his second outing in the ex-McRae Focus WRC, made a very cautious start. Running without anti-lag he was further slowed by the fact that, as the first car on the road, he was acting as a snow plough for the rest of the field. The result was that after two of the eight stages he lay in fifteenth place. However, having developed full confidence with the car and switched on anti-lag, Ingram took fastest time on the remaining six stages, moving in to the lead with one stage to go.
Huw Jeffreys/Avarina Connor led from SS1 to SS7 and, although they had no answer to the WRC, they were the class of the rest of the field, coming home as the top contender in the Millers Oil Welsh Clubman Championship.
Seventeen year old Nick Kenny put in an impressive performance debuting his newly acquired ex-Julian Reynolds Impreza. A spin on SS1, which cost twenty seconds, was his only misdemeanour as he brought his new car home in third place.
Tim Jones/Don James finished as the top two wheel drive in fifth place. Richard Edwards/Di Brookfield had been as high as fourth place in their Escort when they lost a minute with an off on SS5, they finished eighth.
Mark Lakeland/Joseph Holmes had held second place after SS2, but a gearbox failure put their Escort out of the event. Geraint Mills/Jonny 'Tad' Evans were also challenging for two wheel drive honours when their Manta's engine failed on SS5.
Philip McVay was the early leader in Class 3, putting his Peugeot 205 into a remarkable sixth place overall after two stages, however he was forced out on SS3 with a broken exhaust. Andrew Brown briefly took over the class lead but he retired with a severe misfire on SS5, this allowed Colum McBride through to take in class win. Seamus O’Grady was second in class and the highest placed finisher in the Irish 205 Challenge, of which the Tolputt Keeton Stages was a round.
