The Twilight was Round 5 of the Welsh Road Rally Championship, the first time that the Ecurie Cymraeg event had been a counter for the series.
The format for the event was a series of sections on private tracks during the evening, before a two hour halt at Brecon gave crews time to prepare for a 120 mile night road rally.
Previously the Twilight had relied heavily on the Caerwent Training Area for its daylight route, however the site wasn't available in 2005, so the thirteen mile Cwmcarn Forest Drive and three and a half miles at Cox's Quarry were used twice.
At the Brecon halt the results for the evening sections were displayed on a washing line. Initially it seemed that John Davies/Neil Bevan (Vauxhall Astra) held a 30 second lead over three crews who were tied on 1m43s; these three were Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies (Ford Escort), Glyn Price/Iwan Jones (Ford Escort) and Richard McLachlan/Eddie Clough (Peugeot 205)
The whole of a crew's time card was hung on the washing line and rivals noticed that some code boards on a number of cards had the incorrect counter-signature against them. This led to these crews being penalised five minutes for each offence. Davies/Bevan had one such penalty, while both Jones/Davies and Price/Jones had two.
McLachlan/Clough therefore now led, with Owen Llwyd Edwards/Llinos Jones (Vauxhall Astra) in second, Alison Acreman/Byron Jones (Honda Civic) in third and top seeds Roger Holder/Matthew Maidment (Ford Sierra) in fourth. Of these, only Edwards/Jones were to make the finish, they lost a great deal of time on the Night TC Section and were eventually classfied in eleventh place.
These dramas meant that Mark Robinson/David Powell (Vauxhall Astra), who had been in fifth place at the break, came through to take the win after, on home territory, dropping just one minute on the night leg. They finished just over four minutes ahead of Davies/Bevan, who, without the codeboard penalty, would have won by a minute.
Despite a misfire at low revs, Gary Jones/Andrew Card (Toyota Corolla) cleaned the whole of the night section and finished with the least time penalties of any crew, however they had been penalised ten minutes for incorrect signatures and were classifed in fifth.
