Clerk of the Course: Hywel Thomas
Route: 102 Miles + 20 Selectifs
Venue: Caerwent
Starters: 52
Winners: Jamie Turner/Graham Dance (Rover Metro GTi)
Amman & District MC has intended that the 2005 Welsh Endurance Rally would use venues outside of the Caerwent MOD base, however a road closure order for a cycle race meant that the plans had to be scrapped and the event, like the previous year, was confined to the maze of military roads within the complex that was once used for the maintenance of cruise missiles.
The rally started at Saturday lunch time and ended 24 hours later. Crews tackled ten selectifs on Saturday, this was followed by a 15 mile test in the dark, with a further ten selectifs on Sunday morning. The total test mileage was 102 miles. Navigation was via tulip diagrams throughout. The use of tyres within the Colway Road Plus range was mandatory.
In 2004 the team of Pat Flynn/Stuart Powell had led the rally from Start to Finish, at first it appeared that they were to repeat that feat as they took fastest time on the first selectif. However it quickly became apparent that there was a problem with their Peugeot 205 - it kept cutting out on right hand bends.
The problem became a major point of debate amongst fellow competitors, the event service crew, organisers and on lookers, throughout the rally, with many suggestions being made and tried, however the fault persisted until the Finish, spoiling any chance the crew had of repeating their 2004 success. Sometime after the rally the cause of the problem was finally traced to a fault within the carburettor.
The pattern on Endurance events was that the first half of the rally was all about keeping in touch with the lead whilst conserving the car, the third running of the Welsh Endurance conformed to this model. By the end of the daylight leg five crews had formed a breakaway group, they were covered by just fourteen seconds, but were fifty seconds ahead of the field, remarkably Flynn/Powell were amongst these five, grimly hanging on in fifth place. The positions after Selectif 10 were:
1 Kevin Wilson/Paul Caunt (Citroen AX) 1h07m43s
2 Owen Turner/Andrew Dadswell (Metro) 1h07m49s
3 Jamie Turner/Graham Dance (Metro) 1h07m49s
4 Carl Hawkins/Iain Tullie (Vauxhall Corsa) 1h07m50s
5 Pat Flynn/Stuart Powell (Peugeot 205) 1h07m57s
6 Douglas Brown/Mike Briggs (Vauxhall Nova) 1h08m47s.
Matt Fowle/Graham Raeburn had been amongst the leading group until they picked up a puncture and dropped a minute on Selectif 9.
Hawkins/Tullie were concerned about their tyres, their Colways were a soft compound and were wearing far too quickly, their position was helped when they picked up a puncture and lost the use of a half worn tyre. Iain Freestone/Nick Kennedy had been in second place after two tests, but a broken clutch cable had dropped them well down the order. Using soft compound Colways they were on a charge for the rest of the afternoon, they took fastest times on four selectifs and moving back up to ninth position.
John Cotton/Gill Cotton were in eighth place when their Citroen AX broke a drive shaft on Selectif 5 and Mark Appleton/Dick Appleton held tenth when a cv joint broke on their Peugeot 106 – both crews were out.
Jamie Turner/Graham Dance pulled out all the stops on the night time test which started at 22:30. They were fastest through the selectif and took the lead. Owen Turner/Andrew Dadswell fifteen seconds slower but retained their second place.
Phil Harris/Andy Ballantyne had suffered damaged suspension on their Nova after hitting a kerb on Selectif 10, this had been repaired by the Banham Service Crew and fourth fastest time in the dark moved them into the top ten.
The top six positions after the night section were:
1 Jamie Turner/Graham Dance (Metro) 1h32m33s
2 Owen Turner/Andrew Dadswell (Metro) 1h32m48s
3 Kevin Wilson/Paul Caunt (Citroen AX) 1h33m30s
4 Carl Hawkins/Iain Tullie (Vauxhall Corsa) 1h33m53s
5 Pat Flynn/Stuart Powell (Peugeot 205) 1h34m03s
6 Iain Freestone/Nick Kennedy (Peugeot 205) 1h34m29s.
Gary Preston/Mike Sones went out the rally prior to the night section, they were unable to get their Nova to restart after parking up at the hotel for the supper halt.
As crews reconvened for the Sunday morning tests, the scene was set for a battle between the two Turner brothers in their St Albans Rover Centre prepared Metros – they were not to disappoint. Owen took eight seconds back on the first selectif of the day, to lie just seven seconds behind Jamie. By Selectif 15 the gap was down to three seconds, but this was as close as it was going to get, it was back up to five after the next test and the closely matched crews took identical times over the next three tests.
Jamie’s lead stood at four second prior to the penultimate selectif, at almost ten miles the longest of the rally – it was to be decisive. Jamie was four second faster than Owen over it and, despite being two seconds slower on the last test, secured his and Graham Dance’s first Endurance win.
Wilson/Caunt, who had led for most of Saturday, seemed to have managed to fend off a strong challenge from Hawkins/Tullie to take third place, but on the long Selectif 20 their Citroen AX broke a drive shaft and they were out within sight of the flag.
Hawkins/Tullie had narrowed the gap between fourth and third places from 15 seconds at the start of the day to just one second after Selectif 18, Wilson/Caunt had then responded and were seven seconds ahead when they retired. The Corsa pairing, down to their final set of Colways, went on the finish third despite bending a rear axle after hitting the kerb on the rally’s final corner.
Pat Flynn’s brave effort was dealt a severe blow when he picked up a puncture on Selectif 15 and lost three minutes, he and Powell finished eighth.
