There was a three way battle for the win on the final round of the Welsh Championship which used, for its most part, the roads and tracks of the Epynt Ranges.
The event opened wth a 27 mile Jogularity that began at the Brecon Leisure Centre start line. It wound its way to the east, then north of the rally's base, before ending on the Ranges at the Irish Village. There were five timing points and these were the only controls that were timed to the second in the entire route.
Robert Wilson/Dylan Jenkins emerged with the least penalties, dropping just a single second, while Holrus winners Martin Leonard/Kevin Chaffey were on two seconds. Merfyn Hughes/Graham Dance were in third with a total of four seconds.
The remainder of the event was a series of time controls all timed to the minute. There were 16 TCs on the Ranges before the first petrol halt, which was taken at Llandovery. There was then another 16 TC section; this one on the public roads of the Towy Valley.
These made little difference to the top places as the majority of the front runners cleaned all of the TCs. The first Epynt loop did see the demise of Brian Jones/Michael Hardwick, whose Escort suffered a clutch failure.
After a second Llandovery petrol halt the rally concluded with a final visit to Epynt, where there were 23 TCs tackled, many with target times of less then four minutes. To add to the challenge a thick fog had decended over the hills.
The difficulties caused most crews to add minutes to their totals. Hughes/Dance fell from third to sixth at the Finish, having accumalated eleven minutes of extra penalties. Tim Evans/Alun Probert (Nissan Micra), who had been the runners up on the Holrus, run a few weeks earlier on Epynt, finished in fourth having dropped four minutes on the final loop. One place behind them were Gary Jones/Matthew Maidment, who were on eight minutes, plus the ten they'd collected on the Jogularity.
Three crews emerged as masters of the conditions - Wilson/Jenkins, Leonard/Chaffey and Gerwyn Jones/Ceri Davies were still clean of any TC penalties until TC45. This control was located in a car park to the side of the Dual Carriage, just before the route turned on to Route 60. The fog was particularly thick here and the entrance was hard to spot.
All three were a minute late here, but this was the only time lost by any of them on any of the TC sections, so it was their penalties on the Jogularity that decided the final top three places. Thus Wilson/Jenkins claimed a one second victory margin over Leonard/Chaffey, with Jones/Davies three seconds further back.
The Welsh Retrospective, the final round of the HRCR Nocturnal Challenge, ran alongside the Y2K. It was led after the Jogularity by Chris Jenkins/Tony Brookes, but they, like all the other Historic crews struggled through the TCs and they fell to fifth at the Finish. It was therefore the Porsche 356 of Paul Cornwell/Mick Valentine that claimed the win.
