ALAN JONES 1948-2017

Tributes paid following Alan's death

It is with a very deep regret that we announce the death of a key member of the rallyroots results service, Alan Jones.
Alan was one of those individuals who keeps the sport running. He was rarely in the spotlight but contributed hugely to a large number of rallying activities. This was not just limited to his roles as an event organiser, a steward or as part of the results team; he was keen at undertaking PR duties for a wide range of events, he was forever finding new roads and tracks to use and was the go-to individual when an event had to be run in Radnor Forest - no one knew the footpath requirements there better than he did.
He was dedicated to a task and committed to seeing it completed. He was absolutely reliable and carried out whatever duties he was given in a cheerful manner.
A founder member of Knighton Motor Club, he was an officer for the club until the time of his death. He had been a regular organiser, being particularly associated with his club's Pacemaker Rally.
He had competed, this included an assault as a co-driver in the Skoda Trophy in 1990, when that series was part of the British Open Championship.
Motorsport has lost a faithful servant. Alan’s passing will leave a large gap, which will be difficult to fill.

Alan Jones

So sad to hear of this, Alan was always there in what ever capacity needed, his cheery welcome will be missed by many.

Sad to hear this. One of the true giants of Motor sport on Two & four wheels; Will be sadly missed by us all.

What can be said he was a legend and a friend that was very approachable. He will be missed.

One of the nicest gents in rallying a real loss. Finishes will not be the same without him.

One of the nicest guys around. I hadnt seen him for several but ran into him at the start of the Peak Revs and had a great catch up.

As someone who was very often seen at many events, he will be missed greatly. He was someone who always had time to talk to you and also was a mine of information.

What a shock! So sorry to hear this - he seemed in the rudest of health at Bath Festival. He always had a kind word of all and was a great person to know. A sad loss to Rallyroots, a sad loss to motor sport, and mostly, of course, a sad loss to his family.

Really sad news. I had the pleasure of knowing Alan for many years and he was also a great help to us at Barcud MC on all our events. As others have said, he will leave a huge gap that will be very hard to fill.

I first met Alan when I marshalled on the Valley Services in the early 2000s. I was new to Welsh rallying but he passed some words of wisdom that stuck with me. After that night he always had time for a chat every time our paths crossed. He will be sadly missed, as one of the good guys of road rallying.

A great loss to motor sport.

Alan helped me as a steward on the Valley Service in the late 90s and had been down on every event I organised since then, he was due to come down this year. He will be sadly missed .

Can't add greatly to the kind words posted already, a true gent and a person who always had time for a chat.

Horrible news. One of the good guys - road rallying will be a far poorer place without him.

Not sure when I first met Alan, but always liked a good chat with him and he was one of the nicest people you could meet without him. Rallying will be a lot poorer , RIP Alan Jones we will miss you.

Sad news Alan would always stop and have a chat will be sadly missed.

What a shock! I will miss our phone calls and our micky taking at event, I did not know when we spoke on The Gremlin at would our last time. Thank you for getting me into road rally's. I knew Alan a long time and well. Goodbye my friend. Thank you for the good memories and help.

One of the nicest blokes I have met in road rallying, always said hello and had a good word for everyone.

So shocked to hear this news. I have known Alan since I started competing in mid 90s and would always have a chat at the start or over breakfast. He would always call by for a cuppa when doing pr work in our area for historic events. He was a great help when we ran the first Powys lanes in 2011 and will be greatly missed in the results rooms on Sunday mornings.

That's terrible news, one of those faces you expect always to see at Petrol in the middle of the night... There's a lovely picture of Alan in the Welsh Rally Book helping a car back on, Alan all hair and Flairs.

A person who saw the good in everyone, always willing to help, smiley, and most of all tolerant.
The sort of person we need in the sport.
My condolences to his family who obviously have a larger loss than us, but also to Ian who worked so well with him..... we have lost a true gent and enthusiast

Gutted to hear the news about Alan.
I'm going to miss the banter and that huge smile at road events.
Also, Alan's results predictions at the start, which were pretty damn good :-).
As has been said, Alan was a lovely guy, so much knowledge and quietly getting on with things with no fuss. He will be sorely missed by the rally community. RIP Alan, I'm glad to have known you as long as I did.

A dependable stalwart of rallying. He worked selflessly to give the competitors the best experience possible - one of the often forgotten "back-room" boys and girls that no rally can run without.
Sad times ....

Terrible news. So so sad to hear of Alan's passing. I always enjoyed a few minutes of his time throughout many events since the early 90s. A big loss to the rallying family and I'm sure a much bigger loss to his family.

I am really sad to hear this terrible news.
Alan was always one of the nicest people that I looked forward to seeing on rallies.
RIP Alan. My thoughts are with his friends and family.

Really shocked, Alan was in his usual good form a few weeks ago on the Gremlin where he did his job stoically and with a level head, not much got past him. He will be badly missed.

No road rally would and now never will be complete without Alan and his individual sense of humour being around.
He certainly helped me no end on Rali Mike and Rali Bro Ddyfi and always had a cheeky comment to lift the mood at silly o'clock on a Sunday morning.
Yes he most certainly will be missed.
Condolenses to his family inc that of RallyRoots

A sad loss for rallying in its heartland. He was one of those practical guys who made it work on the ground. He knew and undertood folk! Always worked within the rules - but understood how to 'massage' them in the direction of common sense - with a wry smile and a wink as he did so.

So sad to hear this news.A true friend. He will be sadly missed by many many people, myself just one of them.

Very shocked and saddened to hear the news. I have known Alan for many many years. He was a true gentleman and when he was in his rally mode, was so genuine and fair.
A massive loss to the rally world and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
RIP to a great sportsman.

We are very sad to join with you all to pay tribute to our Founder Member Alan Jones who has passed away. He was a pillar of light in our club as a Director/Secretary and a font of knowledge for us all.
He will be dearly missed for his commitment and love of the sport into which he put so much time and effort.
Rest in Peace Alan, dear friend of Motorsport.
From all at Knighton Motor Club.

I know we all grow old together but Alan never seemed to alter always the same hair even back in 69/70 when we started rallying with Frank and Marion Bright, and as a fellow founder of Knighton Motor Club (then Kinsley Motor Club). RIP Jonner.

Alan was a true giant and encyclopaedia of RR knowledge. He always stopped to chat and was a real fan of Road events. I will never forget going off with Phil Turner on Red lion hill and he was concerned we were the victim of diesel on the road. He was there before we got out of the car to help and I then had a "ride from hell" in his work van back to the start!!!! Great fun Alan, and that summed him up, never too serious (unless he needed to be) and always an infectious laugh.
I will miss you mate.

He was a legend in rallying circles not least because he was a bloody nice bloke but his knowledge of the sport was second to none. Coupled with his desire to help rallying will be poorer without him.

What a shock it was to hear of the passing of Alan. Road rallying won't be the same without him. I'd known Alan well since coming back to compete in early 2000 and there was never an event that he would not come over to you for a chat and catch up. A genuine person who lived for the sport and will be sadly missed by all. RIP Alan.

Very sad to hear of news of Alan's passing, one of life's genuine people with no hidden agenda just a true love of the sport always had time for a chat, not been around night events for a while but will sorely miss the opportunity to seek him out for a catch up.

Haven't seen Alan for a few years since i gave up competing, echo all the other tributes; he was such a nice guy and one of the unsung hero's of the sport. He will certainly be missed. RIP Alan.

Never heard anybody say a bad word about Alan - don't find too much of that in this "sport".
Will miss you chap

It was such a shock to hear about Alan. There wasn't many rallies he missed, and its so sad to think that he will not be around any more! I will miss his hugs and "welldone my dear" at the end of rallies.
RIP Alan you will be missed

Very sad news.
One of rallyings stalwarts, always willing to help, tell a story or a joke, tell you the secret entrance to Radnor forest and always there at stupid o'clock at either a petrol halt or in the middle of nowhere with a smile and a cheeky grin and always at the finish until the last one left. First met Alan early 90's on the Cilwendeg and have had the pleasure of many nights of banter in his company, whether he wanted it or not.
RIP Radnor Man, you will be greatly missed in West Wales, the results room will not be the same.

What a shock and very sad news. I've known Alan since I started rallying back in the eighties and there haven't been many rallies I've been to where Alan wasn't present. During our chats at rallies Alan would always have a wide grin on his face and make his usual comment of 'did I wake you up last Sunday because I know you farmers like to stay in bed in the mornings!' The familiar sound of his Opel Manta coming past with horn blaring after he'd been stewarding on west Wales rallies will be missed. The rallying community has lost a great friend, RIP Alan.

Really good to see the church so full today, it was a fitting tribute to Alan's popularity that he had such a good send-off from his rallying friends.

Agreed, 300+ I would say, be very very hard to replace Alan, if not impossible

Agreed again, very bitter sweet. Seeing loads of RR peeps from past and present but at an occasion we all didn't want.

So sorry I couldn't make it to honour Alan. He was a rock to the whole rallying community and a massive help to me over the last 10 plus years. He will be sorely missed by all.
