Boontree Birl 2003

750 Motor Club (Scotland)

12th April 2003

Clerk of the Course: Eliza Alston

Route: 95 Miles

Maps: 45 & 54

Starters: 9

Winners: Monty Pearson/Ewan Leeming (VW Golf)

Monty Pearson/Ewan Leeming took their VW Golf to a closely fought win on the Boontree Birl Road Rally in North East Scotland.

The event, which was organised by the 750MC Scotland club, used a 95 mile route. It started near Brechin, then took in lanes in the Montrose and Arbroath areas, before reaching the Finish at Carnoustie. It was Round Three of the East Scotland Navigational Rally Championship.

At the Finish Pearson/Leeming were just one mark ahead of the Toyota Corolla of Colin Christie/Ian Morrison, who had led initially. John Shanks/Peter Weall took third in their Lancia Delta, while the Subaru Impreza of Ian Rae/Jim Reed were fourth.

The Non-Expert category was won by Lock Horsburgh/Alan Cowan who were sixth in their Vauxhall Nova. Novice crews were given easier navigational instructions than the main event, therefore competitors in that class were not eligible for overall awards. The class winners were Allan Cusack/Steven Cusack in a Vauxhall Nova.

The win meant that Pearson/Leeming have narrowed the gap to the Championship leaders, however fifth place on the Boontree Birl was enough for the Edinburgh University MC crew of Angharad Parry/Iain Craven to retain the series lead.
