Rali Bro Teifi 1999

Arwyn Thomas/Andy Bowen took a close fought victory on the Bro Teifi Rally, beating early leaders Eilir Morris/Phil Clarke by just nine seconds after 110 miles of competition.

The Cardigan based event, was a round of the West Midlands Road Rally Championship and attracted a maximum entry of sixty cars.

The use of the event sponsor's premises at Pantgwyn Quarry as a start venue allowed competitive motoring to commence immediately. A tight route in classic 'Cilwendeg country' followed.

Top seeds Tony Davies/Dyfan Davies were amongst the early retirements when the gearbox on their Golf failed. Car 2, Elgan Jones/Byron Jones, fared little better as they were forced to withdraw just prior to Petrol when the clutch cable broke on their Astra.

Alun Gaunt/Marc Jones were expected to do well, but wrong slot lost them the lead and then a missed code board cost them third place.

Sarah Harmer/Cath Woodman made the long journey from East Anglia for the event and finished tenth despite dropping time dealling with a broken exhaust.

For a comparatively short event there were a number of lead changes. John Evans/Andrew Thomson looked in a strong position until drive shaft failure put them out early in the second half. Hefin George/Dilwyn John then took the lead but lost it on the very final section as they dropped over two minutes to the quickest crews - they finished third.

Eilir Morris/Phil Clarke should have benefitted from this but fastest time by 17 seconds at the very last control gave Thomas/Bowen their narrow win.

The leading Semi-Experts were Nick Abbot/Mark Andrew, who clinched ninth overall in their Escort.

The intricate route, which utilised numerous farm tracks, proved a tough test for the novices, however six were classified as finishers, with Mike James/Richard Evans (Ford Escort) taking class honours.
