Greenleaves Rally 1998

Sixty & Worcestershire Motor Club

4th/5th April 1998

Clerk of the Course: Richard Wheeler & Peter Davies

Route: 114 Miles

Maps: 147 148 160 & 161

Starters: 40

Winners: Terry Pressdee/Ian Tullie (Vauxhall Chevette)

The Northern crew of Terry Pressdee/Ian Tullie took their Chevette to victory on the Greenleaves Rally in Mid-Wales. It was a demanding event that was badly affected by the cancellation of a key element of the route in the second half.

Greenleaves 1998

The rally used, that rarity for current Welsh road rallies, plot and bash navigation, and although only straightforward map references were used, Sixty & Worcestershire MC put on an event that kept navigators under pressure for the entire route. It was a round of both the Welsh and North Western Road Rally Championships.

The early pace was set by the Toyota Corolla of Peter Zjalic/Richard Preece, who led at the petrol halt. However a number of time consuming wrong slots in the second half meant that they could only manage seventh overall at the finish. Huw James/Patrick Walsh also started well and, despite being delayed by a non-competing car, were only 12 seconds down on Zjalic/Preece at the halfway point. Unfortunately later on an alternator failure saw the Aberyswyth crew struggle to the end and, having to cut route, they finished in 22nd place.

It was not a good night for the top seeds as the Escorts of Paul Holmberg/Ian Vale and Pete Cotton/Dave Pitchford had both retired by Petrol. Meanwhile Graham Evans/Ian Mills in their Toyota Corolla were to complete the rally with the least time penalties of any crew, but picked up a fail for an incorrect code board, thus relegating them to ninth place.

Toby Adams/Pat Gadsby had picked up a fail in the first half and were then excluded for failing to visit the final Main Control. While Moonbeam winners Dennis Quinn/Andrew Thomson had their first unsuccessful outing of the year as they came home in 14th.

The fifteen mile section after the halfway halt was the most demanding of the night but had to be discounted from the final results after the Escort of Dave Boucher/Jon Stobbs spun and blocked the road midway through the section. The car was eventually moved but by that stage a large number of crews had re-routed. At the Finish these crews were initially awarded large penalties for the controls they had been forced to miss, however these were eventually withdrawn by the organisers.

The results then showed that Pressdee/Tullie, who had been eighth at Petrol, had cleaned the sections that had survived the cancellations in the second half. They therefore had almost a minute's cushion over the Escort of Wayne Morris/Paul Middleton. Neil Griffiths/Carl Williamson took third, the same position as they held at the halfway point. Alyson Acreman/Byron Jones were fourth, with Bernie Harrison/Ken Owen fifth.

Keith Parry/Perry Roe were the comfortable winners in the Semi-Expert Class, bringing their Opel Manta home in twelfth overall despite having to struggle without a clutch for the final 20 miles. The rally proved a tough test for the novices with only three being classified as finishers. Howard Dray/Mark Jones won the class, bringing their Astra home six minutes in front of the Escort of Mark Harris/Mark Powell.
