Starters: 94
Winners: Chris Jenkins/Tony Brooks (Austin Mini)
There were chaotic scenes at the start of the Gremlin Rally in Brecon as a number of competitors refused to start the event, and in some case prevented others from doing so. Some crews were concerned at the weather conditions they would encounter on the Epynt Ranges, this followed the previous weeks' artic weather, with these concerns being further fuelled by a heavy snow shower that hit Brecon just prior to the original start time.
The start was delayed for an hour while the organisers drove the route to assess the situation. This resulted in a number of sections being scrubbed, but the decision was made that the rally would go ahead. A number of competitors still refused to start and some of these seem to have stopped others from leaving the line by standing in front of the cars.
It wasn't until Car 15, Michael and David Pedley, insisted on starting that the impasse was broken. Eventually 65 of the 94 crews who signed on did compete, of these 48 made it through to the Finish.
Twenty-nine competitors, including most leading Welsh Championship contenders, refused to start the rally. The event was eventually less than half its intended length - the final run over Epynt having to be scrapped due to the late start
For the second time in three years Chris Jenkins/Tony Brooks took their Mini to a popular win on the Gremlin.
Andy Lane/Iain Tullie (Ford Escort Mexico) would have beaten the Mini crew to the win but they, along with a number of other crews, missed the very first code board of the night; the penalty for missing a board was five minutes and they finished two minutes behind the winners.
The results gave Jenkins and Brooks the lead in the HRCR Night Championship, of which the Gremlin was the second round.
All the historic entrants took the start and all but two made the finish; Peter Barker/Lee Vincent put their Lancia into a deep ditch, while Neville Frampton/Mike Gray also visited the scenery, they got back onto the tarmac, but not within their maximum lateness.
The leading modern crew were Mark Robinson/David Powell, who, due to the conditions, made a late swap to a standard Ibiza; they finished in third place, three minutes ahead of fourth placed Matthew Jones/Richard 'Tyson' Morris (Vauxhall Astra).
