Paul Schatz/Carol Alexander won the Harry and Ivy, a Novice only rally, after a close battle with Geoff Hall/Martyn Taylor. The event's new spring date made it the climax of the home club's 12 Car Winter Series. Despite being run in appalling wet weather, the rally, which was under new management, was well received by competitors.
On the night the top two crews were separated by their times on the only regularity section of the event, neither dropped time on any other test. Schatz/Alexander edged the matter by 28 seconds.
Graham Payne/Ron Turner finished in a lonely third place, while Ron Kendall/Nick Cooper were the last crew free of fails in fourth place.
Mark Binney/Heather Grisedale would have split the two leading crews in the results, being just 8 seconds behind the winners, but they were ineligible for an overall award due to their Semi-Expert status.
The treacherous conditions took their toll - top seeds Robert Jenkinson/Chris Stewart retired after an off early on, while Dave Head/Matthew Field were challenging for a top place until an excursion lost them time. Steve Wright/Mark Shepherd went out when their Peugeot 205 developed a severe misfire and a damaged exhaust stopped the Vauxhall Magnum of Roger Goth/Steve Capstick.
