There was a close night long battle for the lead on Caernarvonshire & Anglesey MC’s JJ Brown Memorial Rally, which eventually saw Mei Jones/Steve Herbert take victory in their Astra.
A capacity sixty car entry took the start for a rally which had a high non-competitive mileage interspersed with short tight competitive sections. The event started on the Lleyn, before moving east to the Conway and Ogwen vallies, finishing with a section on Anglesey.
Jones/Herbert led for most of the event but were always under pressure from the 2002 winners Eifion Thomas/Carwyn Evans. The latter crew went to the front at the start of the second half, however Jones/Herbert fought back so that they started the final section through the Bwlch Quarry with a twenty-four second lead. Thomas/Evans took eleven seconds back through the quarry but it wasn’t enough to stop Jones/Herbert taking the win.
Tony Gush/Brynmor Pierce put in a good performance to take third, thirty seconds ahead of Dewi Williams/Geoff Williams.
The leading Semi-Expert crew were Will Lewis/Bryan Glass, who were seventh overall, while the first Novice crew home were M Singleton/A Jones, who rounded off the top ten in their Peugeot 205.
Noel Hughes/Gwawr Hughes went out on the third section when the diff failed on their Saab 96. Gwyndaf Evans/Paul Roberts retired when they hit a rock and bent their Impreza’s wheel back into the arch on the fourth section. Clive Jones/Steve Goodwin retired their Peugeot 205 when they hit the rocks dislodged by Evans’ incident.
