Kent Road Rally 2004

Sevenoaks & District Motor Club

14th/15th February 2004

Clerk of the Course: Chin

Route: 147 Miles

Maps: 177 & 188

Starters: 21

Winners: Olly Smith/David Coles (Peugeot 309 GTi)

Olly Smith/David Coles took their first ever road rally win on Sevenoak & DMC’s Kent Rally.

Crews tackled a 147 mile route in north and west Kent, with the emphasis on testing navigation.

Despite thick fog in the first half, a number of crews maintained clean sheets until the rally reached the narrow lanes of the North Downs above Luddesdown. Smith/Coles dropped a minute at TC21, this left just two crews clean. These were Mike Biss/Cath Wodman and Phil Kendall/Andy Coshan. Biss/Woodman then dropped a minute at TC33. However Kendall/Coshan’s lead was short lived as an error saw them arrive at TC34 four minutes late, this was their only penalty of the night and they finished third.

The out come of the rally was decided on the section leading up to TC41, Smith/Coles were a minute late but Biss/Woodman, having initially taken the wrong route, dropped two minutes.

Rob Dance/Graham Dance finished fourth, the only other crew free of fails. Toby Jeffries/Nick Clarke, benefitting from the fitting of spotlights on their Nova 1.3SR, were fifth and first Semi-Experts home. Simon Bush/John Upham lost time when a set of route instructions flew out of the window; they were classified in sixth.

Spotlights were a major problem for Doug Kingsley/Ben Greenfield (Vauxhall Nova GTE); they had a problem with a relay early on and then forgot to retighten the lens, which later came loose. They survived, despite a dislike for the fog, to finish seventh.

Competitors in the Novice Class and Clubman Rally were given simpler navigation and, therefore, weren't eleigible for overall awards. The Novice category was won by James Firth/Ed Butler (Ford Fiesta). Simon Bird/Bekki Samtani (Mini Cooper S) were the only starters in the Clubman Rally and duly finished and won the event.

Twenty-one cars took the start at Westerham Garage and nineteen made it to the Finish at Wrotham Heath.
