Mia Phillips Charity Navigational Road Rally

Pembrokeshire Motor Club

18th/19th March 2006

Clerk of the Course: Rob Chell

Route: 95 Miles

Maps: 158

Starters: 60

Winners: John Davies/Graham Dance (Vauxhall Astra)

Graham Dance made it two wins in two weekends, following on from his South West Endurance victory by navigating John Davies to first place on the Mia Phillips Charity Rally.

This was Pembrokeshire MC's first road event in 21 years, their previous night rally having been the Lamphey Service Station Rally in 1985. Most of the action took place in the little used lanes south of the A40 in the Narberth area. The rally had a number of tight sections and all crews dropped times at several controls.

Hefin George/Dan Thomas were fastest to ITC1, ten seconds ahead of Steve Woods/Aled Richards; Martyn O'Connor/Dilwyn John were nine seconds further back, with Davies/Dance a second behind them in fourth.

There was a major shake up of the lead positions by the time that crews reached ITC2. Davies/Dance were fastest over the section and took a lead that they weren't to lose. They were now fifteen seconds ahead of Byron Jones/James Morgan, with Woods/Richards 24 seconds off the lead in third.

Tony Davies/Dylan Jones were seeded at Number Two, but were an early retirement when their Nissan Micra broke a driveshaft.

A time consuming wrong slot for the leaders meant that by the petrol halt the battle for overall honours had closed up. By that point Jones/Morgan were only three seconds behind Davies/Dance, with O'Connor/John and Woods/Richards tied for third place two seconds further back.

The second half was less demanding than the first and Davies/Dance dropped just 13 seconds after the halt, this left them at the Finish eleven seconds ahead of Woods/Richards, who took the runner up spot. Jones/Morgan finished in third, seventeen seconds off first place.

There was also a close battle for the Semi-Expert Class, Barry Davies/Eurig Lewis beating Aled Davies/Gethin Sollis by just two seconds. In contrast, Gareth Evans/Gareth Davies were clear winners in the Novice Class, finishing six minutes clear of their rivals.

Max Jones/Phillip Powell finished in last place after they had cut the first half of the event, this was due to having getting stuck in a ploughed field on the first section.
