Mei Jones/Steve Herbert (Vauxhall Astra GTE) took a comfortable and well deserved win on the AFG Rali Môn after their most likely challengers either hit problems or made errors.

AFG Rali Mon 2004

The 85 mile route used both the lanes and private tracks of northern Anglesey. It included a run along the notrious beach road near Caergeiliog.

By the petrol halt Jones/Herbert had built up a lead of 59 seconds over Carwyn Edwards/Aled Pennant (Mini), with Keith Parry/Lee Evans (VW Golf GTi) 27 seconds further back in third. Elfyn Richards/Alan Jôs (Peugeot 205 GTi) were in fourth, just one second behind Parry/Evans.

The beach road had already claimed some victims. Steven John Williams/Geoff Williams (Peugeot 205 GTi) wrong slotted on the track and became stuck; they went OTL before getting out. Dewi Williams/Darren Garrod (Peugeot 205 GTi) hit a large puddle on the road and lost almost ten minutes before they got going again.

Top seeds Eifion Thomos/Carwyn Evans only made it as far as the second section before pulling up with their Peugeot 205 overheating, suggesting a broken engine.

The Finish Jones/Herbert had extended their lead to 2m 21s, with Edwards/Pennant maintaining their second position to the end. behind them there had been significant changes.

Keith Parry/Lee Evans survived a lengthy stop to repair a broken exhaust, the time lost dropped them to fifth. Meanwhile Elfyn Richards/Alan Jôs dropped to eighth after missing the very final triangle control of the event.

These misfortunes allowed Dyfed Pritchard/Alwyn Jones (Peugeot 205 GTi) through to take third place, with William Lewis/Gwawr Hughes (Peugeot 205 GTi) in fourth.

Darren Jones/Heddwyn Jones had been going well until the impact of a large puddle on the final section dislodged the starter motor on their Corsa. They got to the Finish but had to cut the last few controls; they were classified in 31st place.

Noel Hughes/Ceri Hughes (Saab 96 V4) also made the Finish after cutting route, as the Saab's gearbox began to fail.

Lee Hodson/Owen Jones won the Semi-Expert class, while Ian Fox/Dave Jones were the leading novices.

Allan Roberts/Simon Cartwright (Ford Escort) retired after hitting the bank at 332 928½.
