Weardale Navigational Rally

Durham Auto Club

4th March 2006

Clerk of the Course: Gordon Dundee

Route: 95 Miles

Maps: 87 88 & 92

Starters: 21

Winners: Malcolm Holdsworth/Richard Holdsworth (Honda Civic)

Malcolm Holdsworth/Richard Holdsworth took the overall win on the Weardale but only after an engine capacity tie break had to be used to put them in front of Andy Whittaker/Charlie Tynan. Both crews had dropped a minute over the snow bound lanes in the Muggleswick area and then each went on to pick up another one minute penalty on the last section near Newbiggin.

Alex Willan/Paul Taylor were the only crew to clean the Newbiggin test, this pulled them into a clear third place. Darkie Lewis/John Tubman had been in contention for the lead until they had had to retrace their steps to find a code board, this incident cost them three minutes and they finished fourth.

In the Intermediate class Chris Purvis/Robert Renwick were followed all the way by Chris Langan/Bob Clouston, the latter crew were never able to recover from losing 8 mins at TC4 due to navigator sickness.

Durham Auto Club had laid out a 95 mile circular route in Co Durham. It was the third round of the TMSG Navigational Rally Series. Overnight snow left some of the exposed roads over the moors very slippy, with the rest of the route predominately dry with some icy patches.

Chris Dodds/Yolandie Walsh eventually took a comfortable win in the well supported Newcomer category. They had dropped just a minute on the snowy Muggleswick section, giving them a comfortable lead at the halfway point, while, at that point, Roger Broom/Andy Brown were on 19 minutes, having missed a code board. Broom/Brown closed the gap to eight minutes in the second half, but still had to be content with second place in the class behind Dodds/Walsh.

Ron Kendall/Nick Cooper were the winners of the Historic class by a large margin over John Wood/Niall Wallace.
