Winners: Glyn Price/Iwan Jones (Ford Escort)
Glyn Price/Iwan Jones dropped just 40 seconds to win the 200 mile long Gremlin Rally. The event started in its traditional manner with a ‘Jogularity’ section before crew embarked on a tour of some of the classic Welsh rally roads, including Elan Valley-Cwmystwyth road and the Abergwesyn Pass. However these no longer represent the challenge they did in Targa days and many of the crews, including the winners, cleaned all the sections after the Jogularity.
Price/Jones were only in twelfth place after the opening sections but a clean run to the end saw them finish 25 seconds ahead of the field. Mark Roberts/Ceri Davies led after the Jogularity but a minute dropped at the first standard time control meant they took the runner up spot.
John Davies/Graham Dance led at Petrol and looked to have the event in their hands when a earth strap came loose on Abergwesyn, they dropped four minutes fixing the problem – they finished in fifteenth place.
The Gremlin Historic Rally ran alongside the modern event, this was won by the Mini Cooper of Jon Wood/Paul Taylor, who would have been third in the combined event.
Top seeds Keith Jenkins/Tony Brooks were delayed by gearbox problems in the first half and were therefore unable to challenge for the win. Andy Lane/Iain Tullie had led after the Jogularity but they went out with a wheel bearing failure on their Mexico.
Peter Joy/Matt Fowle made the journey to Brecon only to find that their Elite wouldn’t fire up and they were on their way home before the rally started.
