Winners: Mark ‘GT’ Roberts/Llinos Jones Davies (VW Golf GTi)
A faultless performance against tough opposition saw Mark ‘GT’ Roberts/Llinos Jones Davies take victory on the Pacemaker Road Rally.
The pair were joint fastest through the opening one minute test and then, along with most leading crews, dropped time at just one further control in the first half. The sections after Petrol proved tougher, especially as it had started to rain and this made the roads very slippery.
The result was that the winners finished 22 seconds ahead of top seeds, Dylan Davies/Dale Furniss. The latter pair had survived some gearbox worries to secure the runner up spot.
Richard Jerman/Iwan Jones had shared fastest time on the opening test but soon afterwards their Escort developed problems with its thrust bearing and, although the pair managed to hold third at Petrol, they eventually had to cut route and finished in 48th place.
Steven John Williams/Lowri Davies had their excellent run of success come to end when their Escort suffered a gearbox failure.
Reian Jones/Michael Gilbey held fourth place at Petrol, with Nic Morris/Martin Phasey just behind. This became the battle for third after Richard Jerman’s problems put him out of contention and Jones/Gilbey came out on top to claim the last podium spot.
