Pacemaker Road Rally

Sponsored by Lennox Electrical

Knighton Motor Club

12th/13th July 2014

Clerk of the Course: Simon Naughton & Steve Price

Route: 84 Miles

Maps: 136 & 137

Starters: 62

Winners: Richard Jerman/Lowri Davies (Ford Escort)

Richard Jerman/Lowri Davies took their second Welsh Championship win of the year when they took first place on the Pacemaker Rally. The event used the same format as last year; a tight highly demanding competition within just an 80 mile route. The organisers succeeded in their aim as the winners dropped time at 11 controls plus the two tests that opened proceedings.

Once again, the battle for the lead developed into a three way battle between Jerman/Davies, Championship leaders Ian ‘Dude’ Roberts/Gwawr Hughes and Mark ‘GT’ Roberts/Dylan Jenkins. It was the latter crew who held the lead until just before the halfway mark; Jerman/Davies having been slowed slightly by a mysterious clutch problem that then cleared itself. The winners moved to the front just before the halfway point and powered away to finish over a minute ahead of the field.

In the second half Roberts/Hughes also overhauled Roberts/Jenkins to claim the runner up spot at the end and gaining another useful haul of Welsh Championship points.

Leading BRC co-driver Dale Furniss took to the driver’s seat for the rally and, with the highly experienced Phil Clarke navigating, took fourth place. Kevin Kerr/Max Freeman, who would have finished in fourth, were excluded at the finish after being reported for aggressive driving at two separate controls; an area where the WAMC has been keen to improve driver discipline.

Reian Jones/Michael Gilbey had an unhappy event after their Seat Ibiza developed brake problems, they lost almost five minutes at one point due to this. They eventually finished in eleventh place.

The Semi-Expert class was dominated by the Escort of Gari Evans/Marc Hughes. They finished in eight place overall, over four minutes ahead of their nearest rival in the category.
