Ystwyth Targa Rally

Sponsored by Cwrt Garage

Abersytwyth & District Motor Club

6th July 2014

Clerk of the Course: Philip Ralphs & Dylan James

Tests: 16 (35 Miles)

Venue: Sweet Lamb

Starters: 75

Winners: Lewis Morgan/Cadog Davies (Ford Escort)

The Ystwyth Targa Rally provided Lewis Morgan/Cadog Davies with their maiden rally win. The two 20 year olds swept to victory ahead of a number of older and more experienced crews. The rally used a Targa format and saw competitors tackle 16 tests at Sweet Lamb.

Morgan/Davies were on the pace from the start, holding second place after the first loop of six tests, only one second off the lead. The pair took first place on Test 9 and held it until the Finish. The battle for the lead was blunted to a certain extent by the fact that the fastest crews beat the Target Time on several tests. However the winners proved that they were the class of the field by taking fastest time by 21 seconds on the final, and longest, test of the day.

Second place had to be decided on a tie-break after Irfon Richards/Andrew Edwards and Andy Davies/Michael Gilbey finished on the same total. Both crews had taken turns at leading in the early stages, but it was 2013 winners Richards/Edwards who had been faster on the opening test and therefore took the runner up spot.

There was a tight battle for the win in the Semi-Expert Class right up until the final test when Carwyn Adams/Richard Smith stormed clear and finished over half a minute ahead of their nearest category rivals.

Clive Williams/Stephen Mills were amongst the retirements; breaking a shaft on the final test. Also on the non-finishers list were Aaron Poutney/Max Freeman, however overnight Freeman had already navigated Guy Robinson to victory on the Kick Energy Derbyshire Rally.
