Route: 11 Tests (10 Test Miles)

Starters: 55

The Clywd Vale Targa Rally was a compact affair, it fitted 11 tests into a three hour schedule; the first car started at 09:30 on Sunday morning and returned to the event's Ruthin base at 12:30. The route initially headed north as far as Rhuddlan, then moved east towards Mold, before skirting around Ruthin and the final tests at the Livestock Market. The tests were largely on farm tracks.

Fifty-five cars took the start; the fifty-sixth entry, Christopher Sandbach/Nicholas Sandbach, was not amongst them after the trailer carrying their Mini One blew a tyre on its way to the event.

The first two tests were to the south-west of St Asaph, the first at Ty'n Y Coed and the second at Ty'n-y-ffordd-fawr; both were roughly a mile long.

Top seeds, Iwan 'Bont' Roberts/Moi Williams (Toyota Corolla) made their intentions clear as they beat the bogey by three seconds on Test 1. The first time pairing of Guy Woodcock/Suzanne Barker (Ford Escort) were second quickest, nine seconds over bogey, while Rikki Proffitt/Graham Wild (Porsche 911) were third, seven seconds further back.

The Nissan Micra of Aron Jones/Heledd Pughe became the first retirement of the event, the crew withdrawing with a lack of brakes after Test 1. Dave Alock/Andy Darlington (Datsun 280Z) were also an early retirement, forced out by a blown diff.

Test 2, 'Concrete Road', saw Roberts/Williams once again take fastest time, two second ahead of Ian Lloyd/Lewis Rock (Ford Escort), while Woodcock/Barker were third. This gave the Toyota pairing a lead of 17 seconds.

Test 3 at Rikki Proffitt's farm became a bit of a lottery as the early runners had to contend with long wet grass, while the passage of cars created clear tracks for later contenders. The top six fastest times for the test were taken by crews in the bottom half of the field. Dale Hooper/Peter Hooper (Subaru Impreza Sport) were fastest and won themselves a bottle of champagne donated by the land owner.

Roberts/Williams were only 31st quickest, ten seconds behind Woodcock/Barker; this put the two crews seven seconds apart.

Action then moved to the north west of Mold for the next four tests. Tests 4 and 5 were at Penbedw, the two tests had a common start but different second halves and finishes. Unfortunately, Howard Price/Catrin Price put their Ford Puma off the road in the first half of Test 5, blocking the tracks for following cars. Both tests had to be cancelled.

These dramas were of no consequence for either Neil Jones/Ben Forrester (Peugeot 205) or Sion Jones/Jaymee Roberts (Citroen Saxo VTR), both crews retiring around this point with broken drive shafts.

Ffagnallt was the venue for Test 6; Roberts/Williams, Woodcock/Barker and Lloyd/Rock shared fastest time here. Lloyd/Rock were recovering after, running early in the field, they had struggled through Test 3; this had dropped them to tenth place, but they were now back up to fifth. Proffitt/Wild were still third, in front of the leaders of the Club Rally, Tom Thomas/Phil Roberts (Subaru Impreza).

The final 'northern' test was at Lygan Uchaf. Roberts/Williams were fastest, with Lloyd/Rock second, which moved the Escort crew up into third place. Woodcock/Barker were nine seconds off the fastest time, taking the gap between the two leading crews back to 17 seconds, exactly as it had been after Test 2.

Test 8 and 9 were south of Ruthin at Bryn Chwareu, behind Llysfasi College. Other than a slightly different start, the two tests were identical. Roberts/Williams were fastest on both, extending their lead to 41 seconds, with two tests remaining.

Second fastest on Test 8 was the Subaru Impreza of Dan Jones/David Edwards; they had been moving up the leader board after picking up a ten second cone penalty on Test 3; after Test 9 they were in fourth place. The fell back one place over the final two tests, finishing in fifth place.

The final two tests were at the event's base, Ruthin Livestock Market. Fastest time on both was taken by Gwynant Jones/Llifon Williams (Toyota Corolla), this moved this pairing from tenth after Test 9, to eighth after Test 10 and to a final finishing position of fourth overall. They were the winners of the Club Rally by 38 seconds.

Roberts/Williams were third and sixth fastest on two tests, which gave them a victory margin of 49 seconds over Woodcock/Barker, who won the Historic Class. Lloyd/Rock were third, 20 second off the runner up spot, but only a second ahead of the Club Rally winners.

There were 47 finishers, 22 in the Inter Club event and 25 in the Club Rally.
