Route: 100 Miles (8 Regularities, 11 Tests)

Starters: 58

The Ilkley Jubilee was once again based at Leyburn Auction Mart, with a large part of competitive motoring within the Catterick Military Training Ranges.

It was the sixth round of the HRCR Clubman Championship, where Ian Crammond was sitting on a healthy lead margin in the Drivers' table. It was tighter in the Navigators' race; Ryan Pickering held top spot, but had Matthew Vokes and Henry Carr in close attendance.

A number of late withdrawals meant that 58 cars took the start, with ten of these contesting the Targa event; this followed the same route as the main rally, but had simpler tulip navigation for the regularities. Tests were scored on the time over bogey, rather than simply time taken.

The first car, Matt Fowle/Ryan Pickering (Ford Escort), left Leyburn Market at 09:00 and headed immediately to the Ranges, where a regularity and three tests were tackled. There was one further reg before the morning coffee halt. The frantic pace of the event was indicated by the fact that the halt was scheduled for only an hour after the start.

Regularity One started on Bardon Moor and ran up the western side of the Ranges; it had five timing points in its six mile length. Fowle/Pickering were on top by two seconds over the section, with Paul Crosby/Mark Appleton (Porsche 911) second best.

There were then three tests in the Ranges, where John Haygarth/Martyn Taylor (Opel Kadett Rallye) were six seconds faster than Ali Procter/Lynsey Procter (Peugeot 205 GTi). Significantly the Opel was 16 seconds quicker than Fowle/Pickering, this put Haygarth/Taylor into the lead.

Procter/Procter took best time on Test 2, this gave them a share of the lead alongside Haygarth/Taylor, who were fourth on the test. Test 3, Black Plantation, saw 15 crews either beat or matched the bogey.

There was a delay at the start of Reg Two, the first on public roads, when it was discovered that a route hand out, covering the reg, that should have been issued at MTC 1, hadn't been distributed. The missing paperwork was shipped to the reg start and, 20 minutes late, competition recommenced.

Darell Staniforth/Martin Pitt (Mini Cooper S) were best over the four timing point section, Haygarth/Taylor were only two seconds further back, which put them back into a clear lead.

Out of the event already was the Porsche 924S of Philip Wood/Kelvin Phipps, which broke a driveshaft at a test start.

At the coffee halt at the Bolton Arms, Downholme, Procter/Procter were in second place, 26 seconds behind the leaders, and 11 seconds ahead of the leading Experts, Russell Smith/Dan Harrison (Peugeot 205 GTi). The latter were just a second ahead of Crosby/Appleton.

A further regularity and four tests were contested before the lunch halt, which was back at Leyburn. The reg started near the coffee halt and ran through Grinton and Castle Bolton before finishing at Bellerby Camp. Ian Crammond/Matthew Vokes (Mercedes Benz 280SL) dropped least time on the reg, while Crosby/Appleton were two second behind and this moved them up to second overall on the leader board, 36 seconds behind Haygarth/Taylor.

Chasing HRCR points, David Mann/Ian Doble (MG C GT) had been in twelfth place at coffee, but their rally came to an end as something within the transmission broke with a loud bang after Reg 3.

The four pre-lunch tests were all in close proximity to the north west of Leyburn. After them Haygarth/Taylor, fastest on Test 4, led by 41 seconds, as Crosby/Appleton lost time on the Black Quarry test and fell to fifth as a result. Therefore, Procter/Procter were back to second, and Smith/Harrison back in third place at the lunch halt.

Ilkley Jubilee Historic Rally 2024

Heavy rain had started falling while the cars were at Lunch and it continued throughout the rest of day, with only short sections of drizzle easing the wetness - slightly.

The afternoon started with a return to the Ranges, with two regularities and three tests, repeats of Tests 1 to 3. There were then three further regs on the public roads, which took the route to the east of the A1(M). Competition finished with a final test at Scruton.

Regularity Four was to be a dramatic one; it was near Gandale in the southern part of the Ranges. After only ten cars had passed through the middle of the reg, smoke grenades started to be thrown amongst the cars, an army exercise had intruded on to the route. The squaddies stopped any cars from entering the area that they were using. Their argument was very persuasive as they had guns. This led to the cancellation of two timing points and a route check.

There was more drama on Reg Five, which used the tracks around Hauxwell Moor. Both Fowle/Pickering and Crosby/Appleton failed to locate the first timing point, this added two and a half minutes to their totals and they dropped out of the top ten.

Jon Dunning/Henry Carr (Ford Escort RS2000) were best on Reg Four and fastest on Test 7; they had moved up to fourth place by the time that the cars left the Catterick Ranges. Smith/Harrison dropped least on Reg Five and this allowed them to overtake Procter/Procter, who had lost time on Reg4, for the runner up spot.

After the Ranges, the leading Opel had a reduced advantage, but still held a lead of 23 seconds. Smith/Harrison, in second, were now over a minute ahead of Procter/Procter, who were not far ahead of a gaggle of four cars fighting for the final podium position; these were Dunning/Carr, Crammond/Vokes, John King/Oli Waldock (Toyota MR2) and Staniforth/Pitt.

Reg Six was a lengthy one, starting on the southern edge of the Ranges and finishing north of Bedale. Crammond/Vokes were best over the reg and now shared fourth place with Dunning/Carr. King/Waldock fell behind Staniforth/Pitt, but there was now almost a minute between these two crews and the battle for fourth.

Over Regs Seven and Eight, Haygarth/Taylor continued to grow their lead, arriving at the final test with an advantage of 35 seconds over Smith/Harrison. Good performances on all of the last three regs pushed Crammond/Vokes to within eight seconds of Procter/Procter in the fight for third. Dunning/Carr had fallen back and were now 44 seconds behind the Mercedes pairing.

Haygarth/Taylor were fastest on the final test and this saw them come home with a final victory margin of 42 seconds. The result pushed the driver, who had missed Round 2, the Hughes, back in to contention for the HRCR Clubman Drivers' title, although Ian Crammond, finishing in fourth added significantly to his total as well.

Second fastest on Test 11 allowed Smith/Harrison to claim the Top Expert Award and second place overall. Procter/Procter held on to third as they beat Crammond/Vokes by two seconds on the last test. The two cars ended ten seconds apart.

The Targa Rally was won by Andrew Thompson/Joshua Bailey (Mazda MX5), after long time leaders, Kevin Savage/Jayne Wignall (Suzuki Ignis Sport) missed a Route Check on the last visit to Catterick.
